The Secret Life Of Cloud Droplets

$

0
Like raindrops streaking across the windows of your car while you drive through a rainstorm, water droplets in clouds travel in airflow streamlines — following currents of air usually without touching. However, the air inside clouds tends to be turbulent, as any nervous flier can attest to, and swirling turbulent air causes droplets to cluster.

For 20 years, atmospheric scientists have conjectured that water droplets do indeed cluster inside clouds, largely owing to the knowledge that turbulent airflows are full of spinning vortices that mix fluids well. But clouds swirl on such vast scales, that doubts persisted whether the turbulence simulated by a computer or generated in a laboratory could be translated to the atmosphere. A team of atmospheric science researchers have taken instruments to the atmosphere itself, and have confirmed that water droplets do indeed cluster together inside clouds.

The article, “Fine-Scale Droplet Clustering in Atmospheric Clouds: 3D Radial Distribution Function from Airborne Digital Holography” was published in November in the journal Physical Review Letters.

To make this determination, the researchers took their experiments to the sky, using an airborne holographic instrument known as the HOLODEC, short for the holographic detector for clouds. The instrument is fixed under the wing of Gulfstream-V High-performance Instrumented Airborne Platform for Environmental Research aircraft operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The HOLODEC resembles a claw, its prongs can record three-dimensional images to capture the shape, size and spatial position of everything that passes between.

“The clustering signal that we observed is really small, so as is often the case in science, a careful analysis had to be performed to detect a small signal and to convince ourselves that it was real,” said Raymond Shaw, professor of physics and director of the atmospheric sciences doctoral program.

**Extended Across the Sky**

Susanne Glienke, who was a visiting doctoral researcher at Michigan Tech from the Max-Planck Institute for Chemistry and the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany, conducted the data collection and holographic image analysis. She then passed the information to Mike Larsen, associate professor at the College of Charleston and Michigan Tech alumnus, who looked at how tightly droplets cluster by calculating the probability of finding two droplets spaced apart at a specific distance compared to the probability of finding them at the same distance in a randomly distributed setting. He determined droplet clustering becomes more pronounced at smaller particle-to-particle distances.

“If droplets cluster in the clouds, they are more likely to collide,” Glienke said. “Collisions increase the rate at which droplets grow, and therefore can decrease the time needed until precipitation begins.”

Glienke notes that knowing about clustering improves the general knowledge of clouds and can lead to improvements in forecasting the behavior of the clouds: When will they rain? How long will the clouds last?

Additionally, apart from influencing rain, clustering also decreases cloud lifetime. If a cloud dissipates quicker, it has a smaller influence on the radiation budget — and influences global climate, if many clouds are involved.

The experiment required a long continuous sample, flying the plane through stratocumulus cloud decks at a constant altitude.

“We were not sure if we would be able to detect a signal,” Shaw said. “The clouds we sampled are weakly turbulent, but have the advantage of being spread out over hundreds of kilometers, so we could sample and average for a long time.”

Marine clouds behave differently from clouds over land. Continental clouds typically have smaller droplets, due to more abundant cloud condensation nuclei, which are needed for water to condense on. Continental clouds, which are typically more turbulent, are more likely to have clustered droplets.

**The Sky’s the Limit**

Because the clouds examined in the study were not particularly turbulent, which meant that a random distribution of droplets was more likely, it made the presence of clustered droplets all the more important.

“We were excited and skeptical at the same time, when we first saw a signal emerge from the very noisy data,” he said. “It took a lot of discussion and testing to become confident that the signal was significant and not an instrumental artifact.”

Shaw notes that this validation is important to the field of atmospheric science because the detected clustering signal is consistent with concepts developed during the past two decades, based on lab and theoretical work.

“In clouds with more intense turbulence, the clustering signal could be much stronger, and could influence the rate at which cloud droplets collide to form drizzle drops,” Shaw said. “But exactly how that happens will need more work.”

The work shows there is still much to be learned about clouds and their effects on the planet. Reported by Eurasia Review 12 hours ago.

Configuration-Free Wireless CAN Bridge Achieves Predictable Latency, Without Sacrificing Stability Or Range

MÖLNDAL, Sweden (PRWEB) December 20, 2018

Kvaser, a global leader in CAN (Controller Area Network) development, is pleased to introduce the Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS, a high-performance wireless CAN bridge to connect CAN networks. Comprising a preconfigured pair of plug-and-play units, with integrated antennas and rugged housings, Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS provides a rapid way of exchanging raw CAN data.

Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS, the first in Kvaser’s new Air Bridge product line, facilitates the job of the system integrator in situations that make wired connection unsuitable or challenging, such as between two moving parts that are connected by CAN. Employing a proprietary 2.4G radio and frequency hopping mechanism, the Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS controls the data rate, radio packet format, output power and pairing method to achieve predictable latencies, without sacrificing stability or range. This makes the Air Bridge effective in infrastructure and control applications, where accurate message delivery times are essential. Transmission range is as much as 70 m, with a maximum data rate of 1200 messages per second and a packet latency of 4.8 ms.

“Cabling is convenient in most environments but in some, such as motion control, it is challenging to implement and costly to maintain. Kvaser Air Bridge Light is a preconfigured CAN bridge that minimizes set-up time, whilst maximizing performance in line-of-sight CAN implementations, such as vehicle testing, motion control and in situations where CAN cables are exposed to harsh environments,” commented Lars-Berno Fredriksson, president of Kvaser AB.

A key feature of the Kvaser Air Bridge Light is Automatic Baud Rate Detection, whereby the pair of devices automatically detects and connects to any of the following CAN network speeds: 1 Mbit/s, 500 Kbit/s, 250 Kbit/s, and 125 Kbit/s. Auto Baud Rate Detection is carried out locally on the device, enabling the Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS to link two CAN networks that are operating at different bitrates.

The Kvaser Air Bridge Light comes in two variants: (00808-3) Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS is approved for the European Union, while (01008-6) Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS (FCC) is optimized for the US. Both models share the same functionality but have different radio transmission schemes due to regulatory differences.

More information about the new Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS, including full performance and technical specifications, can be found at More information is available at http://www.kvaser.com/airbridge. The device can be ordered directly from Kvaser or through one of the company’s authorized sales representatives.

Notes to editors: The Kvaser Air Bridge Light HS is the first of a new line of Kvaser products. ‘Light’ denotes that this is configuration-free.

Spain No Longer Bucks The Trend On Far-Right Parties – Analysis By William Chislett*

The recent snap election in Andalucía saw the far-right party Vox storm into the regional parliament with 12 of the 109 seats, and so end Spain’s exceptionalism.

Until then Spain, to the surprise of many, had bucked the nationalist surge that has swept across the EU, with, for example, France’s anti-immigrant and anti-system National Rally and Germany’s AfD, despite having, in the view of analysts, the conditions for such a party including very high unemployment and a large foreign community. The anomaly is viewed as a legacy of the 39-year right-wing dictatorship of General Franco, who died in 1975.

France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen was quick to tweet (in French): ‘Strong and warm congratulations to my friends from Vox, who scored a meaningful result for such a young and dynamic movement’. Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s former chief strategist at the White House, offered technology services before the Andalusian campaign to help Vox put across its message in social media, but they were apparently not taken up.

Whether Vox’s victory –395,978 votes (11.9% of the total) as against just 18,422 (0.46%) in the 2015 Andalusian election– will see it going from strength to strength in next May’s municipal, regional and European elections and a general election if one is called ahead of the due date of July 2020 remains to be seen. Yet there are clear grounds for believing that Vox is here to stay. It won a mere 47,182 votes (0.2% of the total) in the 2016 general election.

Vox’s first success was largely at the expense of the conservative Popular Party (PP), which lost 316,409 votes and seven of its 33 seats, and to a much lesser extent the Socialists (402,035 and 14 of its 47 seats, respectively). The latter’s voters mainly switched to the liberal Ciudadanos (C’s, which won 21 seats, 12 more) and to some extent the leftist coalition Adelante Andalucía (AA) whose main component is the far-left populist Podemos and which until Vox was the main recipient of anti-establishment votes. The voter turnout of 58.6% was the lowest since 1990.

The Socialists won the most seats (33) of all the parties but it was their worst performance ever in their stronghold, which they have ruled for 36 years. AA’s 17 seats are not enough for the Socialists to carry on governing the region, and the PP (26 seats) will need the 17 seats of C’s and Vox’s 12 to form a very narrow majority government or a minority one with parliamentary support from Vox.

That the political earthquake caused by Vox, created five years ago by Santiago Abascal, a former PP politician, should happen in the leftist stronghold of Andalucía, which provides 20 of the Socialists’ 84 seats in the national parliament, surprised many (polls forecast a maximum of four seats). Yet there are fundamental factors why it happened in Spain’s largest region (population 8.4 million). As well as the fatigue with having been ruled by the same party for so long and the corruption scandals that have engulfed the Socialists, Andalucía has an unemployment rate of 23% (8 pp above the national average) and a very large immigrant community, particularly from non-EU countries.

This is particularly the case in the province of Almeria where 18.5% of the 700,000 population is foreign, mainly Moroccans and Sub-Saharans, well above the 10% for Spain as a whole. Eight of the 10 municipalities with the largest growth in votes for Vox were in Almeria, and in all of them more than 20% of votes went to Vox (30% in the case of one of them).

Non-EU foreigners tend to be employed in the sectors that Spaniards do not want to work in, particularly agriculture (sweating under a ‘sea’ of plastic greenhouses in areas like El Ejido) and are perceived as a drain on healthcare and education, although they are in fact net contributors to social security. They are also viewed as a threat to Spanish identity, even though many of them have been there for years.

The surge in illegal immigration this year will also have fed into people’s fears of the ‘other’. In the first nine months, there were 7,120 illegal crossings of Moroccans to Spain via the Western Mediterranean (see Figure 1). Figure 1. Illegal entry of Moroccans via the Western Mediterranean, 009-18 (1)

Spanish society has changed profoundly since Franco died and the country successfully moved to democracy. The country is no longer ethnically homogeneous: the number of registered foreigners has risen from 165,000 to 4.7 million, excluding the more than 700,000 naturalised Spaniards. Not all the change has been to the liking of conservatives, particularly personal-freedom issues such as the legislation of abortion and gay marriages (the latter in 2005). In addition, there is no longer a stigma about voting for the far right as there was in the first post-Franco years.

The election in Andalucía was the first since the one in Catalonia at the end of 2017, which saw those parties in favour of unilaterally creating an independent republic holding onto their narrow majority in the Catalan parliament. That election was followed in June of this year by the unseating of the PP national government, following a censure motion in parliament won by an unholy alliance of the Socialists, Basque nationalists and Catalan secessionists.

The right has not forgiven the Socialists, with only 84 of the national parliament’s 350 seats, for attaining power by this means thanks, in part, to Catalan parties who want to break up Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is regularly attacked by the right for not being firm enough with the secessionists.

The Andalusian election was an opportunity to punish the Socialists and not just for local reasons, and also the PP, which has never won enough votes in the region to make a difference. Vox’s votes have achieved change, although its shape has yet to be determined.

The question now is whether Vox’s success is a flash in the pan or the start of something more significant. The evidence shows that once a party is installed in a parliament, be it regional or national, support for it tends to grow. This has been the case of Ciudadanos, which began life in Catalonia in 2005 against the burgeoning independence movement and after gaining three seats in the Catalan parliament in the region’s 2006 election moved out of its territory and won nine seats in the 2015 Andalusian election (21 in the latest election). This was then followed by winning 40 seats in the national parliament in the 2015 general election.

Moreover, in the case of ‘stigmatised’ parties, such as those on the far right, winning parliamentary representation makes them more respectable and hence an option for voters. Fourteen European countries have far-right parties in their parliaments (see Figure 2). Figure 2. Rise of nationalism in Europe: % of votes won by nationalist party in most recent national elections

Country Name of party and % of votes
Austria Freedom Party (26%)
Bulgaria United Patriots (9%)
Cyprus ELAM (3.7%)
Czech Republic Freedom and Direct Democracy (11%)
Denmark Danish People’s Party (21%)
Finland The Finns (18%
France National Rally (13%)
Germany Alternative for Germany (12.6%)
Greece Golden Dawn (7%)
Hungary Jobbik (19%)
Italy The League (17.4%)
Netherlands Freedom Party (13%)
Slovakia Our Slovakia (8%)
Switzerland Swiss People’s Party (29%)

Last updated: September 2018. Prepared by the BBC.

Since 2015, when the mould of Spain’s essentially two-party system was broken by Podemos and Ciudadanos, political life has become fragmented and parliament gridlocked. Vox could well intensify that fragmentation by adding a fifth party.

Rigaku Publishes Method for On-Line Sulfur Measurement in Bunker Fuels in Advance of New Marine Fuel Requirements

A new application report from Applied Rigaku Technologies, Inc. demonstrates the measurement of sulfur (S) in residual and light oils by X-ray transmission to enable compliance with new bunker fuel restrictions.

AUSTIN, Texas (PRWEB) December 21, 2018

The shipping industry is continually experiencing regulatory changes driven by increasing environmental concerns, resulting in ever-tightening regulations restricting sulfur (S) emissions from ships’ fuel. It has been announced by the UN’s shipping agency that the new IMO (International Maritime Organizations) guidelines for the sulfur content of marine fuel (bunker fuel) at sea will drop from 3.5 wt% to 0.5 wt% in early 2020. The sulfur content of traditional bunker fuels used in the shipping industry will therefore need to be blended down to these lower concentrations to meet the new specifications.

X-ray transmission gauging (XRT) involves measuring the attenuation of a monochromatic X-ray beam at an energy that is specific to sulfur. On-line, real time X-ray transmission measurement of sulfur is an established method for the measurement of sulfur in heavy and light hydrocarbon process streams and will be a valuable tool in monitoring sulfur levels vis-à-vis the new regulations.

Although in-line sulfur gauging has been in use for years, early systems did not produce consistent measurements. For precise on-line determination of sulfur, the Rigaku NEX XT Advanced X-ray Transmission / Absorption (XRT/XRA) Total Sulfur Gauge resolves the issues inherent in older technologies and is optimized to be an ideal tool for blending operations supplying marine bunker fuels.

Applied Rigaku Technologies, Inc. has published a new application report that details the measurement of sulfur in heavy and light oils to satisfy the needs of refineries, pipelines, blending operations, bunkering terminals and other storage facilities, while ensuring compliance with the new standards. The report includes complete information about sample preparation, method calibration and repeatability and demonstrates the performance of the Rigaku NEX XT On-Line Total Sulfur Gauge.

Featuring uniquely engineered hardware and novel proprietary software technologies, the NEX XT system is faster, more sensitive and much more compact than previous generation systems, and can operate as a stand-alone analyzer or provide real time closed loop control when tied into a blending or plant wide automation system. With a sulfur detection range of 0.02 – 6%, the NEX XT analyzer capable of meeting the analysis requirements for the new regulations.

Because the NEX XT utilizes a transmission technique and unique flow cell design, coatings of paraffin or other deposits on the analysis windows which may occur during normal operations do not affect the sulfur measurement as the coatings are a negligible part of the total X-ray path.

In addition to compliance monitoring for the new IMO guidelines, applications for the NEX XT analyzer also include bunker fuel blending to meet MARPOL Annex VI sulfur restrictions, interface detection of different grade fuels delivered via pipelines, refinery feedstock blending and monitoring, and the quality monitoring of crude at remote collection and storage facilities.

The results of the aforementioned application report demonstrate that, whether used for crude oil blending and monitoring, assaying or blending marine bunker fuels or switching pipelines, the Rigaku NEX XT XRT process analyzer is well suited to meet the varying industry demands.

TORONTO, Dec. 21, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- *Eastmain Resources Inc. (“Eastmain” or the “Company”- TSX:ER, OTCQX:EANRF)* announces drill assay results from three holes (642 m) at the Serendipity Prospect on the 100%-owned Clearwater Property (the “Property”) in James Bay, Québec. The Serendipity Prospect is located 15 km east of the Company’s million-ounce Eau Claire Gold Project and at the northern end of the 14-km Knight-Serendipity volcano-sedimentary Horizon (“KS Horizon”). Drilling at Serendipity confirmed volcanogenic massive sulphide (“VMS”) hosted gold mineralization at the opposing end of the KS Horizon from the Percival (VMS-style) discovery which is located 5 km directly south (see press releases Nov 13, 2018, and Dec 20, 2018) (see *FIGURES 1-5*).Drilling was conducted at Percival and Serendipity to test either end of the 14-km long, L-shaped KS Horizon, as part of Eastmain’s growth-focused exploration program. The targets were identified from soil samples and mapping in 2018. Specifically at Serendipity, drilling also followed up on mineralization exposed historically at surface by channel sampling (2006), prospecting and trenching by Eastmain (see* OUTCROP PICTURES 1, 2*) and previous explorers up to 2008 (see *FIGURE 3*).

*Drilling Highlights include:*

· *Drilling confirmed thick and shallow gold, silver and zinc mineralization to a vertical depth of 50 m*

· Intersecting a folded sequence of cherty and graphitic argillites, mafic volcanic rocks and felsic volcaniclastics locally intruded by felsic porphyry dykes.

*Claude Lemasson, Eastmain President and CEO, commented,* “We are excited with the results from the shallow gold targets at both Percival and Serendipity. The results support our goal to identify potential satellite deposits from our district-sized Clearwater property which has exposure to over 30 kms of major mineralized features. Looking to 2019, we will be planning larger exploration programs at both our Clearwater and Eleonore South JV properties, in line with our 3-in-3 exploration vision to identify 3 million ounces of total mineral resources by the end of 2020.”

· Intervals are presented in core length; Holes are generally planned to intersect mineralization as close to perpendicular to strike as possible and true widths are estimated to be 70% of downhole length when hole and stratigraphic dips are considered.
· Assays presented are not capped.  Intercepts occur within geological confines of major zones but have not been correlated to individual structures within these zones at this time.
· Vertical depth is measured from the surface to the mid-point of the reported interval.

*Drilling Results*
Holes ER18-819, ER18-820 and ER18-821 were drilled at Serendipity in October 2018. Holes ER18-819 and ER18-820 were drilled on a single section (see *FIGURES 2, 3, and 4*) to undercut gold mineralization exposed in a folded sequence of silicified metavolcanics and metasediments revisited during the Company’s 2018 summer exploration program. These two holes were drilled into the apex of an easterly opening synformal fold to define continuity of mineralization below the outcrop area. Both holes intersected gold enriched intervals (33 m core length) within a sequence dominated by graphitic shales with nodular pyrite, interbedded with chert and silicified siltstones. The sequence includes local intervals of massive sulphide (pyrrhotite+pyrite+/-sphalerite+/-galena) with chert and is strongly deformed with a penetrative schistosity. Alteration includes silicification, fracture-controlled carbonate mineralization and disseminated pyrrhotite. Internal intervals in these intersections returning higher gold values (1.0 g/t Au over 12 m in ER18-819 and 1.75 g/t Au over 8.8 m in ER18-820) exhibit increased pyrrhotite-pyrite concentrations in a chert horizon.

Hole ER18-821 was drilled to the southeast to intersect the southern limb of the fold tested by Holes ER18-819 and ER18-820 (see *FIGURES 3 and 5*). This hole intersected 32 m of weakly altered interbedded siltstones and metasediments before entering a thick sequence of basalt metavolcanic rocks cut by thick silicified, pyrite mineralized feldspar porphyry intrusions. A high gold value was intersected from 27.0 m to 28.5 m (4.26 g/t Au over 1.5 m incl. 11.8 g/t Au over 0.5 m) in a siliceous and locally brecciated feldspar porphyry with quartz-muscovite-biotite veining.

*The Serendipity Prospect*
The Serendipity Prospect is located along the western margin of NW-SE trending Hashimoto deformation zone (D3), at the intersection with the Natel deformation corridor (D2). Mineralization is strongly deformed and appears to be affected by all identified phases of regional deformation in the area. The Serendipity sector is hosted by bimodal volcaniclastic and deep-water marine sedimentary rocks comprising an assemblage of mafic volcanics, felsic to mafic tuffs and graphitic black shales with nodular pyrite, locally interbedded with stratiform and syngenetic massive sulfide lenses and chert, suggesting an exhalative mineralization in a deep-water marine environment with a potential to host gold-bearing, polymetallic VMS mineralization which may be remobilized and re-concentrated by folding during deformation events. The units are intruded by felsic porphyry dykes which have also been deformed along with the volcaniclastic sequence. Both are boudinaged and injected with mineralized, smoky quartz veins.

*Clearwater Exploration Program*

Prior to initiating the fall drilling campaign, summer field exploration in 2018 collected 976 samples from 795 outcrops across the Property. A total of 1,004 soil samples were taken for field XRF measurement along the Knight-Serendipity volcano-sedimentary horizon to focus drilling. Based on the summer results, a 5,500 m diamond drilling campaign targeting the Serendipity and Percival gold occurrences along the KS Horizon was planned, and is now complete. Serendipity is helicopter accessible, while Percival will be accessible via trail in mid-January.

A 2019 drilling program will test targets delineated along the KS Horizon, including Percival and Serendipity. The program will be based on new drilling information, as well as acquired geophysical and soil geochemistry information.

*Quality Control and Assurance* - The design of the Eastmain Resources’ drilling programs, Quality Assurance/Quality Control and interpretation of results is under the control of Eastmain’s geological staff, including qualified persons employing a strict QA/QC program consistent with NI 43-101 and industry best practices. The Clearwater project is supervised by Eastmain’s Project Geologist, Michel Leblanc P. Geo. Drill core is logged and split with half-core samples packaged and delivered to ALS Minerals laboratory.  Samples are dried and subsequently crushed to 70% passing a 2 mm mesh screen. A 1,000 g subsample is pulverized to a nominal 85% passing 75 micron mesh screen. The remaining crushed sample (reject) and pulverized sample (pulp) are retained for further analysis and quality control. All samples are analysed by Fire Assay with an Atomic Absorption (AA) finish using a 50 g aliquot of pulverized material. Assays exceeding 5 g/t Au are re‐assayed by Fire Assay with a Gravimetric Finish. Eastmain regularly inserts 3rd party reference control samples and blank samples in the sample stream to monitor assay performance and performs duplicate sampling at a second certified laboratory. For 2016, approximately 10% of samples submitted are part of the Company’s laboratory sample control protocols.

^1 A total of 1,001,200 oz of contained gold in the combined open pit and underground diluted production schedule, as defined in Eastmain’s “Technical Report: Updated Mineral Resource Estimate and Preliminary Economic Assessment on the Eau Claire Gold Deposit, Clearwater Property, Quebec, Canada”.
