Netflix's 6 original Marvel superhero shows, ranked from worst to best Netflix made a deal with Marvel Comics back in 2013 to produce four Marvel-universe shows and a mini-series.

The deal expanded in 2017, when Netflix released its sixth Marvel show, "The Punisher." Its latest is season three of "Daredevil," which dropped October 19.

Unfortunately, two of the shows have already been canceled: "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage," which both had two seasons.

To find out which of the Marvel Netflix shows have fared the best among critics, we turned to review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes for the composite critical receptions of all seasons for each series. We used audience scores to break any ties.

*Orkla's operating profit (EBIT adj.) increased by 7% in the third quarter to NOK 1,353 million. Orkla's operating revenues increased in the third quarter by 3%, to NOK 10,126 million.*Branded Consumer Goods achieved turnover growth of 2%.* *Organic turnover growth was 0.8% in the period, adjusted for the loss of a distribution agreement in Orkla Confectionery & Snacks. Three out of four business areas delivered profit growth.

"We had sales growth in a majority of the markets in which we operate, and are particularly pleased by the progress made in Finland, Central Europe and India. Growth in Orkla Care was hampered by a weak performance in Poland and the UK. Several of Orkla's categories in Norway have been affected by lower campaign activity and higher retail prices to consumers, which had a negative impact on volume growth. In addition, the huge increase in taxes in the Norwegian market resulted in growth in online and cross-border shopping. It is encouraging that the Government is now reversing the increase in the chocolate and confectionery tax," says Orkla President and CEO Peter A. Ruzicka.

Orkla made a number of structural changes in the third quarter. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it decided to integrate the two companies Hamé and Vitana to form a single Orkla Foods company. In the UK, Orkla Food Ingredients acquired the chocolate and caramel manufacturer County Confectionery, which chiefly supplies the industrial market.

Profit from associates totalled NOK 116 million in the third quarter. This 13% increase is largely attributable to Jotun. The market situation remains challenging in Marine Coatings.

Hydro Power achieved operating profit of NOK 102 million in the third quarter, an improvement of 28% from the same period of 2017. The increase is mainly due to higher power prices, while production volume declined.

Orkla's profit before tax rose by 4% to NOK 1,364 million in the third quarter. Earnings per share for continuing operations increased by 3%, to NOK 1.01.

Nature-depleted Scotland needs new era of rewilding says landmark book

$
0
0
Thursday 25 October, 2018A sticking plaster approach to conservation is failing Scotland’s wildlife – and with species such as red squirrel, wild cat and capercaillie declining or on the edge of extinction, a new era of massive rewilding is needed, says a landmark new book from Trees for Life and SCOTLAND: The Big Picture.

Scotland has the space and opportunity to take a fresh approach, with people working with nature, not against it, and allowing ecosystems to restore themselves on a large-scale, say the authors of Scotland: A Rewilding Journey, which is being launched in Inverness this evening.

“Right now, nature is in steep decline – but Scotland is perfectly placed to become a rewilding world-leader. Our wild places can flourish if we allow nature to work in its own way on a big scale, with a helping hand in places. There would be huge benefits for people – from our health and wellbeing to creating sustainable jobs in rural areas,” said Steve Micklewright, Chief Executive of Trees for Life.

Illustrated by world-class images captured by top nature photographers over three years, and with essays from leading commentators, the book lays out an inspiring vision of how rewilding forests, peatlands, rivers, moorlands and the ocean could transform Scotland for the better.

Deforestation, deer and sheep grazing, burning moors for grouse hunting, exotic conifers and denuded seas have left Scotland as one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries, its landscapes supporting fewer people than previously as a result. Climate change now poses a major threat.

Returns or rebounds of species like beavers, sea eagles and pine martens happen slowly. Birds of prey like hen harriers are persecuted. Wolf, crane, wild boar, elk and lynx were all made extinct long ago.

“For decades we've been trying to save nature piecemeal – a rare bird or insect here, a fragment of woodland there. But climate change and biodiversity loss now present critical threats to our survival, and saving bits and pieces of nature isn’t enough. As a wealthy country with plenty of space, we can do so much better,” said the book’s co-author Peter Cairns, Director of SCOTLAND: The Big Picture.

Despite superb nature reserves, amazing patches of Caledonian pinewood and new Marine Protected Areas, nature is now hugely fragmented and diminished across Scotland. Its awe-inspiring landscapes are often ecological deserts, stripped of woodlands. Only 1.5 per cent of its land is national nature reserves, while a quarter is ecologically impoverished grouse moors or deer forests.

Scotland’s seas are in trouble too – with wild salmon stocks declining, heavy dredging raking the sea floor, and gannets feeding their chicks plastic waste.

The book’s publication aims to be a watershed moment in the rapidly growing movement for rewilding, and a catalyst for change by shifting attitudes and perceptions, and sparking debate and discussion.

Momentum for rewilding has been highlighted by widespread calls for the return of the lynx, reintroduction of beavers, and initiatives such as Cairngorms Connect – a land manager partnership that is enhancing habitats across a vast stretch of Cairngorms National Park.

There has also been huge public support for Scotland: A Rewilding Journey’s publication. The book was funded by a successful crowdfunding appeal run by Trees for Life, and is supported by an alliance of organisations including Reforesting Scotland, Rewilding Britain, Rewilding Europe, The Borders Forest Trust, The European Nature Trust, and Woodland Trust Scotland.

Bringing back trees would be a good start for major rewilding. Only four per cent of Scotland is native woodland. Rewilded woodlands like Glen Affric could be enjoyed across the country by expanding pinewoods into a grand nationwide network. This would help red squirrels, crested tits and capercaillie, which can’t cross large areas of open ground and are now imprisoned in isolated islands of woodland.

The book aims to encourage conversations and cooperation between different audiences and groups. Rewilding can co-exist well with farming, forestry and recreational activities.

It encourages conservationists and landowners to work together with mutual respect. Cooperation between deer managers and conservationists could help resolve over-grazing in the Highlands – which prevents woodlands from regenerating – with sporting traditions enjoyed in more natural settings.

Soaring deer numbers could also be managed by allowing the return of apex predators such as wolf and lynx, when the time is right and when public opinion is prepared to welcome them back.

Restoring large areas of wild places could provide employment, especially in the Highlands and Islands. Otters, deer, puffins and sea eagles all support a growing nature tourism economy.

Nature’s benefits also include beavers preventing flooding, trees providing food, and peatlands soaking up carbon dioxide. Studies show how nature boosts people’s health, and is good for children.

Scotland: A Rewilding Journey (£25 from www.scotlandbigpicture.com)is published by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, a non-profit social enterprise that includes leading nature photographers and filmmakers, and promotes the benefits of a wilder Scotland through stunning visual media.

Full-service provider of aluminum extrusions, Taber Extrusions, has completed the relocation and start-up of recently acquired micro-extrusion press lines. Taber’s present and future customers can expect to see increased supply opportunities with the expanded set of extrusion solutions, programs and services.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (PRWEB) October 25, 2018

Taber Extrusions, located in Russellville, Arkansas is a highly regarded full-service provider of aluminum extrusions to a wide variety of industries including aerospace, transportation, defense, and thermal management. Taber has completed the relocation and start-up of the recently acquired micro-extrusion press lines. ISO 9001 and AS 9100 certified, Taber’s present and future customers can expect to see increased supply opportunities with the expanded set of extrusion solutions, programs and services.

“It’s about having all the different to meet the extrusion end users growing needs,” states Jason Weber, Taber Extrusions Vice President of Sales and Marketing, in a recent article by Light Metal Age Magazine. “One of the taglines we use is ‘Shaping Endless Possibilities.’ With the extensive variety of extruded shapes Taber produces—from micro-extrusions to wide profiles and everything in between—Taber embodies that message.”

The ultra-precision extrusion® manufacturing lines have a production envelope with a circle size of 3 inches or less and a weight per foot of 1 lbs. or less. For comparison, the 8,600 ton press in Russellville produces profiles with a minimum weight of 4 lbs. per foot. Unlike traditional extrusion presses, these micro-extrusion presses are built in such a way to allow for the production of extrusions with wall thicknesses of 0.010 inches and tolerance capabilities of +/- 0.001 inches. These micro-extrusion production centers allow designers and engineers the freedom to engineer profiles that would otherwise be unextrudable through conventional presses. (- Light Metal Age Magazine, 2018)

Founded in 1973, Taber Extrusions originally pioneered a process for extruding rectangular billet which enables the company to extrude solid profiles up to 31 inches wide or hollows up to 29 inches. Taber expanded with the purchase of an extrusion facility in Gulfport, MS., in 1995 which houses a new state of the art cast house and two additional presses, and the fabrication area has been expanded multiple times. Taber continues to extrude billet in a wide range of alloys and sizes, and has diversified its markets beyond military since its inception to include aerospace, automotive, marine, infrastructure, and sporting goods, among many others. For these markets, the company supplies cast and extruded products in a variety of soft and hard alloys. Today, Taber Extrusions is proud of its aluminum micro-extrusion capabilities, and full offering of extruded aluminum components, value-added machining services and raw material supply to the North American market.

Creating with paint, cameras, stained glass, pastels, and mixed media, the community’s artists take inspiration from the surrounding beauty of Atlantic Shores’ 100-acre campus. As fall color come alive, many of these artists will celebrate the holiday by gathering on a lake near the heart of the community’s for an outdoor art session.

Just like their younger contemporaries, the works of these seasoned artists are showcased in gallery shows and exhibits, with many of their pieces in private and corporate collections both locally and abroad. Each year, a collection is also featured in a showcase gallery during Atlantic Shores’ Home & Garden Tour. And a rotating selection is featured on display in two of Atlantic Shores’ busiest Clubhouse corridors.

Many artists are self-taught, others are taught by talented residents fellow residents in the community’s sunny art studio. Some residents also instructed by professionals, including classes at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

And appreciation for the arts goes beyond creating their own masterpieces, with trips to local art shows and exhibits at the Chrysler Museum, and Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art to appreciate the work of other artists.

Resident artist Ann McDowell recently spearheaded the creation of Atlantic Shores’ newest artist’s group, composed of artists, crafts persons, and art aficionados. The group meets monthly for art demos and field trips, including to The Artists Gallery in Virginia Beach, where Anne is a member. Her background reflects the diversity of talents among her fellow residents. Ann studied photography at The International School of Photography in New York, and painting at the Virginia Museum, Smithsonian, and The Art League. Her recent style is acrylic incorporating collage, with pieces showcased in four solo shows, and honored with awards at several juried exhibits.

An exceptional painter who re-creates works by the world’s master artists, resident artist Jane Webster considers herself an ongoing art student, and attributes her talents to superb teachers over the years. Her appreciation for the arts goes beyond simply creating her own masterpieces. She has also been a Master Docent at the Chrysler Museum for 19 years.

Also very active in the supporting the arts, resident artist Barbara Fleming even has a gallery named after her at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.

Teachers and students alike are finding fulfillment through art - - some discovering their creative side for the first time later in life, and other reconnecting with artistic talents now they now have time to devote to.

After her husband passed away in 1984, resident artist Margene Sullivan began blooming in her late-eighties, enrolled in painting and dancing classes to fill her time. She developed her fledgling talent, and is now one of the most talented pastel artists in the community. Her artwork has been featured in a student exhibit at the Virginia MOCA. At times, Margene has been the oldest person in her art class, to which she commented, “that’s just fine with me. It’s never too late to learn something new, and to do something you love.”

And their works are capturing the attention of a national fan base as well, winning several categories in the LeadingAge Virginia online senior art show, competing against pieces of art from 17 retirement communities across the state. Some are taking this national exposure to a new level, like 79 year-old artist George Ikonen, who’s also gained fame by being featured “in the buff” while creating one of his paintings as a model in the Pin-Up Boys of Atlantic Shores Calendar, a nearly-nude fundraising calendar featuring gentlemen from the retirement community.

Camaraderie keeps the Atlantic Shores artist community moving forward, encouraging and spurring each other’s creativity. As George Ikonen says, “I first picked up a paint brush in 1972 before heading overseas as part of the Marine Corp. It wasn’t until 2009, when I took a class at Atlantic Shores, that I took up painting again. Now it is such a big part of my life, I don’t know what I’d do without it. I have my friends at Atlantic Shores to thank for that gift.”
