RODA Hosts Vineyard Wind Workshop October 31st in Warwick, R.I. *WASHINGTON, DC / ACCESSWIRE / October 22, 2018 /* The Responsible Offshore Development Alliance (RODA) will convene a one-day workshop on October 31^st, 2018 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, Rhode Island from 9 am-5 pm. The workshop will have two objectives:

1. To establish consensus on fishing transit lanes on the Vineyard Wind and adjacent lease sites; and
2. To provide broad-level input to Vineyard Wind regarding potential fisheries mitigation framework strategies.

This facilitated workshop will include representatives from the affected fishing industry, the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Vineyard Wind, Ørsted, Deepwater Wind, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, National Marine Fisheries Service, and others. We urge all interested fishing industry participants to attend and provide feedback on these critically important issues.

*Background*

The Massachusetts Fisheries Working Group on Offshore Wind has spent considerable time over the past several months developing consensus on transit corridors through the wind energy lease sites in federal waters off of Massachusetts and Rhode Island that are acceptable to the fishing industry from safety and operational perspectives. The Rhode Island Fisheries Advisory Board has also engaged at length on this issue. At its meeting on September 20^th, the Massachusetts group finalized a document that represented broad consensus from fishing industry and other participants. That recommendation is described in the following map:

Since then, certain interests have stated that they will not support the recommendation and there is now a great deal of uncertainty regarding what transit lanes will ultimately be proposed and approved. Therefore, this workshop is intended to consider minor revisions to that recommendation in order to achieve certainty surrounding the transit issue, using the MA consensus document as a starting point for the discussion.

Additionally, Vineyard Wind is in the process of developing fisheries mitigation recommendations for its lease site, which it will finalize in the very near future. This forum will allow an opportunity for the fishing industry to provide general input on elements of a successful mitigation plan for Vineyard Wind's consideration.

Crowley Maritime Corp. on Saturday christened its Commitment Class combination container/roll on-roll off ship El Coqui, which is among the first of its kind to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ship is a key new component in Crowley’s supply chain transformation in the U.S. mainland-Puerto Rico trade.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (PRWEB) October 22, 2018

Crowley Maritime Corp. on Saturday christened its Commitment Class combination container/roll on-roll off ship El Coquí, which is among the first of its kind to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ship is a key new component in Crowley’s supply chain transformation in the U.S. mainland-Puerto Rico trade.

A crowd of more than 350 people, including White House officials; U.S. congressional members; local officials; representatives from ship builder, VT Halter Marine, and Eagle LNG joined Crowley employees, vessel crew members and other industry and union representatives to celebrate this milestone. As shown in this video, Crowley Board of Directors Member Christine Crowley, spouse of Chairman and CEO Tom Crowley, served as sponsor performing the time-honored tradition of breaking a champagne bottle over the hull of the 720-foot vessel at the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal in Jacksonville, Fla.

The event included remarks by Tom Crowley; Alexander B. Gray, Special Assistant to the President for the Defense Industrial Base; Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón of Puerto Rico; U.S. Reps. John Rutherford and Ted Yoho, both of Florida; and Augustin "Augie" Tellez, Executive Vice President, Seafarers International Union.

“It’s a culmination of many, many years of hard work, many, many years of transition for this company,” said Chairman and CEO Tom Crowley, who applauded the company’s employees and partners for their success designing, constructing and operating the ship.

“It’s remarkable to see the transition. Whether it’s going from Ro/Ro to Lo/Lo, the LNG fuel, putting a car house on the back of a container ship, you name it, you go through the transition of what we did to build a ship and create a supply chain that nobody else can match. And it’s here today,” continued Crowley.

El Coquí, which arrived in San Juan on her maiden voyage July 30, is 219.5 meters (720 feet), 26,500 deadweight tons (DWT), and able to transport up to 2,400 twenty-foot-equivalent container units (TEUs) at a cruising speed of 22 knots. The ship can accommodate containers in a wide range of sizes and types – including 53-foot by 102-inch-wide, high-capacity containers and refrigerated containers. Within the ship is an enclosed, ventilated and weather-tight Ro/Ro deck that can protectively carry cars and larger vehicles. This type of shipboard garage is offered exclusively by Crowley in the trade, enhancing supply chain solutions for customers.

The ship is the first of two vessels built as part of Crowley’s Commitment Class project. Her sister ship Taíno is in the final phases of construction and testing at VT Halter Marine’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. She is expected to be delivered later this year.

Gray lauded the commitment by the company and U.S. maritime industry to lead an innovative new era of maritime and supply chain services that support economic and national security.

“El Coqui represents not just the $3 billion investment that Crowley has made in this industry in recent years, it really is the future of the maritime industry itself,” Gray said. “The vessel is powered by liquefied natural gas … it’s the cleanest fossil fuel available. It will serve as a shining example of the technological innovation that’s going to allow this industry to remain a global leader for decades to come.”

The Jones Act ships are U.S.-built, owned and crewed. They are part of Crowley’s $550 million investment under the Commitment Class project, modernizing its supply chain solutions serving diverse customer needs in Puerto Rico, including three new gantry cranes; a new 900-foot pier; and an enhanced terminal operating system at the Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan. In Jacksonville, Crowley partner Eagle LNG constructed an LNG bunker fuel station to fuel the new ships that is among the first of its kind, too.

“Many people may talk about amending the Jones Act or taking it away, but they’re not living on the island,” said Rep. González-Colón. “And they don’t need that supply on a daily basis, on a weekly basis, and have it reliable like we receive it today – and that’s the reason I support the Jones Act.”

Crowley has served Puerto Rico since 1954, longer than any other U.S. shipping company. To learn more about its industry-leading investment in Puerto Rico, including videos and photo galleries, visit a special microsite: conro.crowley.com.

Mexican Naval helicopter crashes into the ocean while engaged in patrol protecting the highly endangered vaquita porpoise in the Sea of Cortez.

San Felipe, Mexico, Oct. 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Video on YouTube to embed

Video and photographs to download

*San Felipe, Mexico – October 22^nd, 2018 – *During the late afternoon of Saturday, October 20^th, 2018, a Mexican Navy helicopter crashed into the ocean while engaged in anti-poaching patrols over the vaquita refuge in the Upper Gulf of California (a.k.a. Sea of Cortez).  Sea Shepherd ship the M/V Farley Mowat participated in the search and rescue operation.  Using the same techniques routinely used to find illegal fishing gear, the marine conservation group pinpointed the exact position of the helicopter wreck at the bottom of the sea using sonar, while assisting the Mexican Navy.

The MI-17 helicopter was in the middle of a patrol, ensuring the marine protected area in the Upper Gulf of California was free from illegal activities, when it apparently lost control and crashed into the sea. Fishermen in the area reported the incident to authorities using mobile phones and sped to the scene in pangas (small fishing skiffs) with the Mexican Navy soon on the scene.

Heroically, 11 of the 12 helicopter crew were rescued.  Nine of them reported to be in good condition, with two seriously injured and one missing. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Mexican Navy.

Sea Shepherd’s vessel M/V Farley Mowat was dockside in San Felipe Harbor at the time of the incident and hurried to join the search and rescue mission,  after offering assistance to the Head of the Navy in the region.  “By the time we arrived at the remote location it was already dark and the search and rescue team from the Navy and some fishermen were in the area looking for the missing flight crew and helicopter wreckage,” said Sea Shepherd Campaign Leader JP Geoffroy. “We used our sonar to visualize the wreck and determine an exact position, which was relayed to the Navy straight away. We used the same equipment used to detect sunken illegal fishing gear poachers use to catch the totoaba fish”

At 1:30 am on October 21, 2018, Navy divers were sent down to confirm the location pinpointed by the sonar.  Due to strong currents, it was not possible for the divers to find anything.  The search and rescue team had to wait for daylight the next morning to perform another attempt.

In the morning, the Navy divers confirmed the helicopter wreckage at 8.7 meters depth as recorded by the Sea Shepherd sonar the night before.  One person is still missing.

“The search and rescue operation the M/V Farley Mowat was engaged in, along with the Mexican Navy, successfully located the downed helicopter in the early hours of the morning of the 22nd of October,” said the Captain of the M/V Farley Mowat, Robert Peel, adding, “The combined efforts of all personnel, of both the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the Mexican Navy, in addition to the use of Farley Mowat's onboard sonar detection systems, allowed us to pinpoint precisely the position of the downed aircraft, to enable navy divers to locate and investigate the aircraft wreck, in very bad visibility condition and strong currents. Unfortunately, the missing person was not located in the aircraft.”

The Mexican Navy is present in the Upper Gulf of California and patrols the area protecting the vaquita porpoise – the most endangered marine mammal in the world.

The vaquita species is in dire straits due to poaching of another endangered species, the totoaba fish.  Totoabas are fished exclusively for their swim bladders, which are sold in Asian black markets for upwards of $20,000 USD.

This is Sea Shepherd’s fifth season in the region, working by invitation of Mexican authorities. The marine conservation group returned to the area in September.

Currently carrying out Operation Milagro V, the conservation group removes illegal gillnets from the marine protected area known as the vaquita refuge in the Upper Gulf of California, as a proven method to keep the small porpoise from extinction.

The last released study showed that less than 30 vaquita were alive. Scientists have not published a new estimate in two years.

The Mexican government is engaging in an unprecedented effort to save the vaquita, dedicating resources from the navy, the army and several other federal institutions to keep the species from disappearing.

“Saving a species from extinction is no small task,” stated Sea Shepherd Founder Captain Paul Watson, who went on to say, “It is sad that one marine is still missing because of this tragic accident. Sea Shepherd commends these brave men that risk so much to protect and defend the endangered vaquita porpoise. Thankfully 11 of the 12 crew were rescued thanks to the prompt action by Mexican Navy officers and Mexican fishermen. Our sincere sympathies to the family of the missing man.”

Broker-Dealer Recruiter Jon Henschen Writes, "Why the U.S. Must Become an ‘Aspirational’ Society Once Again"

In his October 19, 2018 Intellectual Takeout article, "Why the U.S. Must Become an ‘Aspirational’ Society Once Again," broker-dealer recruiter Jon Henschen of Henschen & Associates asks if If America drifted back toward an aspirational society, would we see less bickering and more prosperity amongst its citizens?

MARINE ON ST. CROIX, Minn. (PRWEB) October 23, 2018

In his October 19, 2018 Intellectual Takeout article, “Why the U.S. Must Become an ‘Aspirational’ Society Once Again,” independent broker-dealer recruiter Jon Henschen explores how The United States could be classified by this term once upon a time, but in more recent years it has morphed into an envious society instead.

In his Intellectual Takeout article, Henschen defines an aspirational society as one that feels that the solution for poverty is for the poor to have the opportunity to become rich through hard work and self-improvement.

He identifies Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, and Chile as current aspirational societies. By contrast, Henschen asserts that France is a society consumed by envy, citing several examples, noting it is all too common for neighbors to call authorities out of envy claiming their neighbor isn’t paying taxes because they installed a swimming pool or bought an expensive car.

According to Henschen, this envy stems from a mentality that the economy is a finite pie and inequality results if someone gets a bigger slice of the economic pie. He continues that by stating that what many miss is that the economy is not a finite pie, but thousands of pies, with inventors and entrepreneurs making new pies as they innovate, while obsolete pies fade away.

Henschen continues that, “Unfortunately, envy saps happiness and satisfaction, robbing the individual of the ability to enjoy and be grateful for good fortune. This state of mind not only harms the envier, but those toward whom the envy is directed.”

Further, according to Henschen, “…envy has been made into a virtue by politicians, who recognize it as a way of gaining power and control over unsuspecting populations. Rather than focusing on improving themselves, the envious believe their path to happiness is tied to the fate of those they envy. In essence, their happiness will be increased if they can pull others down, an attitude which runs counter to a prosperous society and hinders social progress.”

In support, Henschen offers this quote on the subject, by scholar Tony Esolen, “Now if we set aside our politically correct egalitarianism—that anti-politics of universal envy—we may see why the hatred of another’s good not only hurts the community, but destroys the very foundation upon which a community must be built. That is because we are plainly not endowed with the same fortune, talents, health, and industry. And we should give thanks to God for that inequality, since He it is who has willed it.”

Continuing, Henschen notes that aspirational societies realize that having equal opportunity for everyone to succeed through hard work, thus enabling the poor to get rich, is encouraged when governments provide a supporting legal, structural, and institutional framework. Common threads in current, upwardly mobile societies are small government, low taxes, few government regulations, rule of law, sound money, business efficiency, and free trade. Aspirational societies respond to inequality by working toward remedying that which is lacking in the individual rather than attempting to seize from others or through destructive revolution.

That the U.S. has some semblance of an aspirational society can be seen in an article, “The Vice of Envy,” by author Rod Dreher. In it, Dreher shares how a Parisian friend immigrated to the U.S. out of frustration. He explained that the culture of envy was terribly destructive in France. He was labeled as a tax cheat because he drove a nice car. France so destroyed his incentive to work, that he came to America and built a successful business, consequently providing employment to many.

But while his business was thriving in America, France was experiencing riots over retirement age and the length of the work week. Given that French workers get 24 paid vacation days versus 10 in the U.S., it’s not hard to see why Dreher’s Parisian friend jumped ship and headed to the U.S. to start a business.

Such an action was not necessarily fair or unjust, either. There is a false assumption that justice requires equality in all things. But as Dreher points out, egalitarianism can offend greatly against justice and become a disaster for all. A just society is one in which there is unavoidably some measure of inequality. Thus, true “social justice” should consist not in egalitarianism, but in working to see people justly rewarded for their labors, the very thing which aspirational societies do well.

Henschen concludes by asking, “If America drifted back toward such an aspirational society, would we see less bickering and more prosperity amongst its citizens?”

Jon Henschen is president of Henschen & Associates, a Twin Cities-based firm that matches financial advisors to independent broker dealers.

He has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and has worked as a registered financial advisor in both the independent and wirehouse channels.

Jon has been featured in numerous financial publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, Reuters, and the New York Post. Reported by PRWeb 4 hours ago.

The FHWA’s extensive study, “Underwater Inspection of Bridge Substructures Using Imaging Technology,” used eight criteria for its evaluation of imaging technology for bridge inspection applications: Perspective (2D, 3D), Accuracy, Object ID/Resolution, Portability, Cost, Ease of Use, Ability to Image Vertical Surfaces, and Post Processing Time. Coda Octopus’ technology scored the highest overall, but scored lowest in the category of Cost and average for Ease of Use. See the summary comparison table on page 35 of the FHWA report on the study.

The FHWA study, including field trials, commenced several years ago using Coda Octopus’ second generation (2G) of the technology. Since then, Coda Octopus has launched its fourth generation (4G), which has addressed a number of areas including size, weight, power and cost. As a result, the Company is confident that if this evaluation were conducted today, its sonar technology would excel, as well, in the two categories where the 2G was assessed as uncompetitive.

This is an important study by the FHWA, which is the leading federal body in setting the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the methods for implementing them. The study was commissioned to “support development of guidance for the use of acoustic imaging for underwater inspection of bridges …. and demonstrate how [acoustic imaging data] compare to inspection findings documented by a qualified underwater inspection diver.” National Bridge Inspection Standards currently call for trained divers to be used for bridge inspection. There are limitations associated with current methods – largely due to unfavorable water conditions, specifically “significant depth, swift currents and poor visibility (black water),” which make it difficult, dangerous or impossible to use divers. The landmark FHWA study is an important endorsement of sonar technology and paves the way for the uniform adoption of new methodologies and the application of acoustic-based imaging technology that will create a more effective, efficient and safe method of underwater bridge inspection by divers.

Annmarie Gayle, CODA’s Chairman and CEO, commented: “We are most pleased that Echoscope^®, the world’s only real-time 3D volumetric imaging sonar technology, which is a multi-utility tool imaging clearly and to the highest accuracy both horizontal and vertical surfaces in zero visibility underwater conditions with no post processing and which is referred to in the FHWA report as ‘Real-Time Multibeam (3D),’ has been assessed as exhibiting the most desirable qualities for bridge inspection. The FHWA assessment shows that this is an ideal technology for this critical application. While we scored lower in both the cost and ease of use categories, our fourth generation (4G) of the technology, introduced to the market earlier this year, addresses these two areas. Our 4G technology has a significantly smaller form factor, is easier to use, and is more competitively priced than the 2G. This FHWA assessment coming on the heels of the new Divers Augmented Vision Display-Head Up Display System (DAVD-HUD), that we are developing for NAVSEA in conjunction with Naval Surface Warfare Center (Panama City Division), pivots Coda Octopus as the natural frontrunner for working with governments to change the methodologies for bridge inspection. Both programs, while separate, are central to benefiting and assisting divers, who are an integral part of bridge inspection activities. In recent U.S. Navy trials our newly launched Echoscope^4G® Surface was successfully evaluated as a handheld sonar for divers.

“We are very excited that our technology is now well placed to be part of the new methodologies for bridge inspections. This is a significant market, given the world’s aging bridge infrastructure, with 500,000 bridges spanning waterways in the U.S. alone. This rating by the FHWA aligns well with our strategy to dominate this market. This strategy is well underway with our 4G technology and our co-development alliance on the DAVD-HUD project. Our next planned initiative is to work with state bodies responsible for both installing and maintaining bridges, to help them implement the new methodologies and standardize Coda’s real-time 3D sonar technology as the tool of choice for this significant application. Additionally, we believe that global adoption will follow the U.S. lead, so this represents a very big opportunity for Coda Octopus that we will roll out to our global customer base,” added Ms. Gayle. “We have already started seeing utilization of our technology for bridge inspections and, as recently as two weeks ago, we supported a project for bridge inspections in and around New York City’s critical infrastructure.”

The FHWA report estimates that, according to the 2011 National Bridge Inventory data, there are approximately 500,000 bridges in the U.S. that span waterways. State highway agencies oversee approximately 31,000 bridges with submerged substructures that require underwater bridge inspection. Approximately 7,600 of these bridges are designated as scour critical. Scour, the removal by hydrodynamic forces of granular bed material in the vicinity of coastal structures and a specific form of the more general term “erosion,” is the number one cause of bridge failure in the U.S. In addition to scour detection and documentation, the report cites the following sonar applications for improving underwater bridge inspections: rapid condition assessment; underwater construction inspection; security threat assessment; visual representation of the underwater structure, and enhancing diver safety and efficiency.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASEC), in its 2017 “Infrastructure Report Card” gave inland waterways a grade of D, and cited C+ for both bridges and ports. There are many factors that lead to bridge failures, including improper maintenance or repairs, along with age. ASEC cited that of the 614,387 bridges in the U.S. alone, almost four in ten were 50 years or older. The most recent federal estimate puts the backlog of rehabilitation projects for the nation's bridges at $123 billion.
