Trump questions climate change during hurricane damage tour Panama City, United States (AFP) Oct 15, 2018

President Donald Trump on Monday met with victims of Hurricane Michael in devastated areas of Florida and Georgia but again cast doubt on the scientific consensus that climate change is caused by human activity. Flying in the Marine One presidential helicopter over Florida's Mexico Beach, one of the towns worst hit by the Category 4 storm, Trump surveyed uprooted trees and rows of roofless h Reported by Terra Daily 3 hours ago.

(QCMI) is pleased to announce it has been selected to take part in MetroConnect 2018, an export assistance program run by the World Trade Center San Diego (WTC) and designed to help San Diego companies accelerate their global growth.

SANTEE, Calif. (PRWEB) October 16, 2018

Quality Controlled Manufacturing, Inc. (QCMI) is pleased to announce it has been selected to take part in MetroConnect 2018, an export assistance program run by the World Trade Center San Diego (WTC) and designed to help San Diego companies accelerate their global growth.

The program will allow QCMI to pursue custom motorcycles and classic American car metal components.

“Developing our own product line and growing our export markets is key to the success not only of QCMI, but also will help sustain our 501(c)3 non-profit Manufacturing Training Academy,” said Rick Urban, QCMI’s COO/CFO.

As the flagship export assistance program of World Trade Center San Diego, MetroConnect helps cultivate a pipeline of export-ready firms to elevate San Diego’s global reach. Now in its fourth program-year, company participants will receive a $10,000 grant, presented by JP Morgan Chase & Co., and a suite of programmatic support services to assist with international expansion strategies. Local companies, QCMI included, will have access to a dedicated staff manager at WTC, and will receive guidance on export compliance, financing and fundraising, among other international support services.

“We applaud QCMI for taking the next step in going global,” said Nikia Clarke, Executive Director of World Trade Center San Diego. “With SMEs like this at the forefront, San Diego must continue to increase its export capacity and boost the region’s global identity. MetroConnect is equipping these companies with the resources necessary to do just that.”

The Metro Connect program is highly competitive, with just 20 companies selected based on a variety of criteria including market interest, assessed impact of funds, current international traction and more. Applicants were assessed by a panel of judges, including representatives from Qualcomm Ventures, Biocom, U.S. Commercial Service, Rough Draft Brewing, San Diego State University, Tech San Diego, UC San Diego, San Diego Regional EDC and WTC San Diego.

QCMI joints a cohort of 19 other companies representing a unique cross-section of San Diego’s industries, from defense to life sciences to software and craft goods – each with plans to take San Diego innovation globally. Collectively, the cohort employs 1,181 and has a combined revenue of $392 million revenue and $115 million in international revenue.

Participating companies will also be considered for the program’s MetroConnect Grand Prize Pitchfest in June 2019, which will provide an additional $35,000 to help one or two companies further advance their global agendas. Past grand prize winners include Cypher Genomics (now part of Human Longevity, Inc.), Rough Draft Brewing and CureMatch.

MetroConnect is underwritten by JP Morgan Chase & Co., with additional support provided by Air Canada, Japan Airlines, Japan External Trade Organization, Qualcomm, SYSTRAN, Taylor Guitars, Lufthansa, City of San Diego and others.

The announcement was made by Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and WTC San Diego on September 26 at WeWork.

China's 100 most innovative companies in 2018 named in third annual report by Clarivate Analytics A total of 15 new companies named representing industries including Information Safety and Medical Devices
BEIJING, Oct. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- China's most innovative companies have been identified in the 2018 Top 100 Chinese Innovators report launched today by Clarivate Analytics, the global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation.  This is the third annual report created by Clarivate, using its patent analysis tools and data including the Derwent World Patents Index, Derwent Patents Citation Index, Derwent Innovation and Derwent Data Analyzer.

Fifteen new companies have joined the list in 2018,12 of which make their first ever appearance in the Chinese Top 100 Innovators list, representing a range of industry sectors from Information Safety to Medical Devices to a range of high tech industries such as Electronic Components, Communications Equipment and Media Internet. Engineering sectors such as General and Special-purpose Machinery, Automotive and Electrical Equipment are again present together with other areas such as Consumer Goods and Healthcare.

The 2018 report created by Clarivate Analytics covers companies located in mainland China only and excludes Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and is based on rigorous analysis of four key criteria:

1. *Patent volume* – based on a certain volume of inventions in the past five years
2. *Patent-grant success rate* – the number of inventions with granted invention patents by the number of basic patents from the most recent five years
3. *Invention influence* – how often the organization's invention is subsequently cited by other companies in the patenting of their inventions over the most recent five years
4. *Globalization* – the ratio of inventions filed for protection in countries outside China versus the total volume for that period

"Our analysis indicates that although there has been a slight decline in innovation quality, there has been a shift in strategy among some top innovators away from filing indiscriminately and cheaply and towards filing more selectively on their higher value innovation.  Companies are filing significantly fewer invention patent and utility model applications and are focusing on patenting only the inventions that are strategically more important to their organization," said Bob Stembridge, Principal Patent Analyst at Clarivate Analytics.

The report also revealed that the number of published patent applications in China has grown by an average of 15.3% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) for the last five years to reach 1.27 million in 2017.  Over the same time period, utility models grew much less at 6.2% CAGR and granted patents rose 15.1% CAGR to just over 420,000. (Source: Derwent Innovation).

Linda Guo, Managing Director of the Greater China region for Clarivate Analytics added, "China's Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), identifies innovation as one of five key goals to drive China's rapid development and growth as the world's second largest economy. It also aims to increase R&D expenditure as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 2.5% by 2020, with support for innovation by way of tax breaks and other significant incentives to support patent filings by China-based entities. This has resulted in a massive increase in the number of Chinese patents as firms seek to protect and commercialize their innovation in one of the largest and most competitive global markets."

Other key findings in the 2018 report identified:

· Technological innovation is becoming more concentrated in China's eastern region, although the balance has shifted from Beijing.
· The majority of the Top 100 Chinese innovators are focused on protecting their innovation domestically with 61 having patent portfolios comprising of 90% or more filed in China only.
· The average number of patent families within the Top 100 patent portfolios with filings in two or more countries grew by a healthy 12.5% compared to last year, indicating more companies are filing more globally, led this year by Huawei, ZTE, AMEC, Alibaba and BOE Technology.
· The overall combined influence metrics of the 2018 Top 100 Chinese innovators (the total of all influence scores) is 4.5% higher this year than 2017.
· The average citation ratio of 0.71 citations per citation for China's top innovators is still below that of the Top 100 Global Innovators at 1.13 citations per citation showing China still has room to increase its innovation influence globally.

The 2nd Annual PenCraft Awards Ceremony Will Be Headlined by Kishan Paul, Chris Kelsey, Anne Howard and Isabella Murphy for Outstanding Literary Achievement

The PenCraft Award ceremony and dinner will be held on November the 10th at Book Nook Inn located in Lumberton, TX to honor over 35 authors for their literary accomplishments

HOUSTON (PRWEB) October 16, 2018

The PenCraft Awards for 2018 will recognize 46 remarkable works in numerous categories at its 2nd Annual Event.

Four of the outstanding Winners will share the spotlight that night as the best of the best.

One of them is Kishan Paul from the Dallas, Texas area. Her novel "The Second Wife," published by Kishan Paul is the recipient of the PenCraft Award for Book of The Year. The book is a dark suspenseful yet romantic love story about the trials and tribulations of Doctor Alisha Dimarchi who is kidnapped by one of her patients, and smuggled into Pakistan. The fast-paced psychologically stunning, intricately written piece of fiction parallels the real-life dilemmas of the many women who are annually kidnapped in our world to be married off or to be used as sexual slaves. The National Crime Information Center (NCIC), reported that in 2010, the US had reported 355,243 women missing and unfortunately in 2018 the numbers will be worse. Whether Paul's intention was to speak out against human trafficking or not, her book brutally illustrates the horrors endured by kidnapped women moved thousands of miles from their home and forced to live as chattel.

Kishan was Born in India, but 4 years later became a Texan and now calls Dallas, Texas her home. She has established herself as a woman who can fuse both action and romance into a subtle yet complex creation, dealing with epic subjects with invention and courage and a great deal of heart. The Second Wife is a powerful new epic that Paul has adroitly woven the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin, and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty. The Second Wife is an Amazon 2016 Kindle Book Awards Winner, The McGrath House Independent Book Awards 2016 Winner, and finalist for The Maggie Award for Excellence of 2016. When not writing, Kishan works as a therapist in private practice.

Anne K. Howard, a practicing lawyer from Connecticut, won Best Non-fiction Book of the Year. She is the author of "His Garden: Conversations with a Serial Killer,” published by Wild Blue Press. Anne Howard became involved with Connecticut’s most prolific serial killer, William Devin Howell when he was first sentenced to a fifteen-year prison sentence for a single murder. She would soon discover that Howell was the murderer of at least six women and one man. Through jailhouse visits, recorded phone calls, and written correspondence, Anne K. Howard methodically probed the psyche of this confessed murderer to try to understand the inner workings of his diabolical mind. What drove Howell to kill? What was festering in his mind that finally led him to rape and kill his first random victim?

Alternating chapters of "His Garden" explore the police investigation involved in bringing a serial killer to justice, the killer's first murder trial, and interviews that Anne Howard conducted with some of the victims' family members.

Howard's book will be featured in an episode of "21st Century Serial Killers," airing on Netflix in Europe in late 2018 and in America in 2019. Interviews with Howard were also featured in a recent episode of "Crime Watch Daily." She writes a blog, "Serial Murders in Connecticut," in which she discusses many solved and unsolved murders in Connecticut.

Anne K. Howard will be at the PenCraft Award ceremony, November 10, 2018, to answer those questions, meet and greet and reveal more about her fascinating interviews with serial killer, William Devin Howell.

Chris Kelsey’s book, “Where the Hurt is,” published by Black Rose Publishing won the PenCraft Award for Best Fiction Book of the Year. His book is a story about the murder of a young African-American woman whose naked battered body is found by the railroad tracks in a small dusty all white west Oklahoma town. The story takes place in the spring of 1965 with racial tensions boiling over across the nation. Ex-Marine Emmett Hardy, the town’s police chief is thrust into solving the murder which most town folks just want to forget. Chief Emmett Hardy is not going to let that happen. He plans on solving the murder; he wants justice for the young girl and he thinks he knows who the killer is.

Chris Kelsey who resides in Pawling, NY, New York has a style of writing that is beautiful and direct, naked and almost pagan in its connection to the landscape he describes and his understanding of base human nature. He possesses a vivid imagination and a whole encyclopedia of niche knowledge about west Oklahoma. His pages talk of people being dragged painfully into a modernity and a new world they abhor.

Chris Kelsey who’s also a jazz musician with many albums to his credit, perhaps gives him an edge in writing stories that flow so smoothly and ring so true. There is not only a rhythm in his music but also to his words.

Chris will be flying into Texas to attend the PenCraft Award Dinner and Ceremony. He will be available for meet and greet Saturday afternoon and after the event.

Isabella Murphy is the author of "From Dark to Light," a book she wrote as a 5th grader. A couple of years later, Isabella’s book was published by Pink Umbrella Publishing. Her delightful book, beautifully illustrated by Natalia Perez, caught our eye and won 1st place for the PenCraft Award in the category of Children Books. Since the release of her book, Isabella has been an inspiration to other writers both young and old.

This talented young author's writing demonstrates an astonishing understanding of what life is about in her allegorical book about a pumpkin that struggles with darkness, the desire to be recognized, sibling conflict, and the desire to be loved. Isabella Murphy's creativity, writing skills and steadfast marketing of her book should be an inspiration to all writers who have a story to tell, but just haven’t had the drive or the patience to write it.

Isabella Murphy's life is exciting, but a bit hectic. Friday evening, November 9th, she will attend a school function in California and, on Saturday morning, November 10th, board a plane and fly to Texas to attend the PenCraft Award ceremony. At the ceremony, Isabella will be available to answer your questions and reveal more about her fascinating life as an 8th grade published author.

Those are our four headliners, but we will also be honoring multiple other great writers who have won not only a PenCraft Award but also honors from other literary competition.

Award-winning authors, Claire Kim a Los Angeles based Criminal Defense attorney and Brad Chisholm an LA-based writer wrote K-Town Confidential and Kat & Maus, both published by Black Rose Writing and represented by Langton International in New York. They are the recipients of the 1st Place PenCraft Award for Romance – Contemporary. They also will be available for interviews during Saturday afternoon meet and greet.

"It's always interesting to meet great writers and to talk to them about where their ideas originated and how they go about their work. What got them started and what inspired them. For authors, it’s a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas with peers," event coordinator Hearne stated.

The PenCraft Award competition strives to give all authors an equal opportunity in promoting their works to the reading public. Our goal is to make our competition inspiring, fun and open to all authors. The PenCraft Award receives hundreds of nominations for awards, but only a small percentage win. Our winners are the best. We hope that we can continue being a conduit to the introduction of new authors and great new books to the reading public.

The PenCraft Award ceremony and dinner will be held on November the 10th at Book Nook Inn located in Lumberton, TX. For more information, please contact the event coordinator, David Hearne 409-656-4625. Reported by PRWeb 4 hours ago.

BeyondSpring’s Lead Asset, Plinabulin, Prevents Docetaxel Chemo-Induced-Neutropenia (CIN) Due to a Mechanism of Action Differentiated from G-CSF

Evidence of Neutrophil Demargination and Bone Marrow Transit Time Reduction by Plinabulin Presented at Joint Meeting of the Society for Leukocyte Biology and International Endotoxin and Innate Immunity SocietyNEW YORK, Oct. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BeyondSpring Inc. (NASDAQ:BYSI), a global, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of innovative cancer therapies, will present clinical trial data on its lead asset, Plinabulin, during a presentation at the 2018 Joint Meeting of the Society for Leukocyte Biology and International Endotoxin and Innate Immunity Society in Chandler, Ariz. The presentation is titled, “Plinabulin-Associated Neutrophil Demargination: Evidence for a Clinically Relevant Mechanism of Action for the Prevention of Chemotherapy-Induced-Neutropenia.”

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients received docetaxel chemotherapy plus Plinabulin (in doses up to 20 mg/m^2) versus docetaxel alone in BeyondSpring’s Phase 2 Study 105. The beneficial effect of Plinabulin on docetaxel-induced CIN was measured at doses of 0 (n=14), 5 (n=14), 10 (n=13) or 20 (n=14) mg/m^2 in NSCLC patients. A nonlinear mixed effects pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling approach was used to analyze absolute neutrophil count (ANC) to determine turnover rate (production and clearance) of ANC with Plinabulin (at different doses) and without Plinabulin.

· *Evidence of Clinically Relevant Neutrophil Demargination:* In the control arm without Plinabulin, the increase in mean absolute neutrophil count (ANC) on Day 2 versus Day 1 was minimal (at 0.1x10E9/L) and not statistically significant (p=0.5). In the Plinabulin arms, on Day 2 versus Day 1, ANC increased due to demargination by 1.8, 1.5 and 3.3x10E9/L at Plinabulin doses of 5 (p
· *Evidence of Bone Marrow Transit Time Reduction: *Plinabulin significantly shortened ANC steady state Synthesis Time (p
The observed effects of Plinabulin on ANC demargination and bone marrow transit time reduction are consistent with IL-6 signaling in bone marrow and tissue microenvironment^1, a unique mechanism of action and a potential complementary therapeutic effect in working with G-CSF.

“We previously presented data showing Plinabulin’s superior product profile, with more limited bone pain and protection against thrombocytopenia, for prevention of docetaxel CIN with its different mechanism of action from pegfilgrastim. We now show additional clinically relevant findings – increased ANC demargination and reduced ANC transit time consistent with Plinabulin’s IL-6 signaling – further differentiating Plinabulin’s MoA from pegfilgrastim,” said Dr. Douglas Blayney, global Principal Investigator for BeyondSpring’s CIN development program and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center.

“Plinabulin’s MoA in CIN is highly differentiated from G-CSF, which makes Plinabulin potentially complimentary to Neulasta for the prevention of CIN. Furthermore, there is a potential for increasing efficacy, while reducing safety concerns by combining these two classes of CIN agents. This provides a strong rationale for a development strategy in CIN that combines these two agents to create a treatment that is superior to each of them alone, both in terms of efficacy and safety/tolerability,” added Dr. Ramon Mohanlal, EVP and Chief Medical Officer at BeyondSpring.

^1 Suwa et al, Am J Physiol 2000;279:H2954-H2960

*About Study 105 *
The study evaluated patients with advanced or metastatic NSCLC after failing platinum-based therapy and was designed as a multicenter, open label, randomized study. In a head-to-head comparison of Plinabulin with pegfilgrastim (Neulasta), a long-acting G-CSF, in a total of 55 patients, Plinabulin was shown to be comparable to Neulasta for the prevention of CIN, as assessed by the occurrence of severe (Grade 4) neutropenia and duration of severe neutropenia (DSN) in the first cycle.

Plinabulin was given as a single dose per cycle 30 minutes after docetaxel chemotherapy, while Neulasta was given 24 hours after docetaxel chemotherapy, consistent with its approved product label. The Phase 2 portion met its primary endpoint, which was to determine the recommended Phase 3 Plinabulin dose, and the Phase 3 trial is ongoing.

*About Plinabulin*
Plinabulin, a marine-derived small-molecule, is BeyondSpring’s lead asset and currently in late-stage clinical development for the prevention of CIN and as an anticancer therapy in NSCLC. Studies of Plinabulin's mechanism of action indicate that Plinabulin activates GEF-H1, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor. GEF-H1 activates downstream transduction pathways leading to the maturation of dendritic cells, leading to T-cell activation and the up-regulate of IL6 in tissue micro environment, which contributes to the prevention of neutropenia.

*About Chemotherapy-Induced Neutropenia (CIN)*
CIN is a common side effect in cancer patients undergoing treatment that involves the destruction of a type of white blood cell, the neutrophil, which is a patient’s first line of defense against infections. Patients with Grade 4 (severe) neutropenia have an abnormally low concentration of neutrophils, making these patients more susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections / sepsis, which can require hospitalization.

The current standard of care for CIN prevention is G-CSF. However, G-CSF has limitations as described in its product information summary. Neutropenia, if severe enough, may cause doctors to lower target doses of chemotherapy, end therapy early and / or delay chemotherapy cycles, each of which has a negative effect on long-term outcomes of cancer care.

*About BeyondSpring*
BeyondSpring is a global, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing innovative immuno-oncology cancer therapies with a robust pipeline from internal development and from collaboration with University of Washington in de novo drug discovery using a ubiquitination platform. BeyondSpring’s lead asset, Plinabulin, is in a Phase 3 global clinical trial as a direct anticancer agent in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and two Phase 2/3 clinical programs in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN). BeyondSpring has a seasoned management team with many years of experience bringing drugs to the global market.

5 Caribbean Islands Where You Can Live on $36,000 or Less a Year—InternationallIving.com

$
0
0
Life on a Caribbean island invokes images of sparkling blue water, white sandy beaches, and a distinct lack of rush-hour traffic—a place to get away from it all. A new report from the editors at InternationalLiving.com identifies five great Caribbean islands that offer retirees the chance to make their dream of a laidback beach escape a reality—and for pennies on the dollar—at $36,000 or even less a year.

BALTIMORE (PRWEB) October 16, 2018

“The idea of Caribbean island living comes with the romance built in—crystal-clear, bathtub-warm waters; coconut palms trees swaying in a languid breeze; no more worrying about an early morning commute or a stressful job,” says International Living’s Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens.

“But most people also assume that a picture-perfect retirement like that comes with a sky-high price tag. It’s the prerogative of the rich, they figure. But that doesn’t have to be the case. If you know where to go, you can live with all the sun and sand you want, for less than it costs to stay in North America. Our International Living report highlights five good-value tropical islands we recommend."

Ambergris Caye, Belize

English-speaking Ambergris Caye is no longer the sleepy little Caribbean island hide away it once was. But for expats who prefer to live in a dynamic community that offers both convenience and the natural beauty of the surrounding Caribbean Sea, it has much to offer.

At 25 miles long and a little over a mile wide, it is the largest island in Belize with San Pedro as its only town. The island is a hotspot for divers and fishermen, thanks to the Belize Barrier Reef. Just a half-mile offshore, this natural wonderland of living coral supports a huge array of marine life.

Belize’s domestic airlines—Tropic Air and Maya Island Air—have frequent flights to the island from Belize City, so getting to Ambergris is easy. You can also reach the island by water taxi.

For between $2,700 and $2,900 per month, or $34,800 a year, a couple can enjoy a comfortable retirement in Ambergris Caye—and that includes the cost of a house or apartment rental. If you own your own home on the island outright, then expats report it’s possible for a couple to live quite comfortably on less than $24,000 a year.

Isla Colon, Panama

Panama’s tropical archipelago may well be one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean. Close to the border with Costa Rica, Bocas del Toro is a group of nine main islands and a few hundred smaller cayos and islets, dotting calm turquoise waters.

The main hub is Bocas Town—a seaside town of brightly painted buildings with many on stilts over the water on the large island of Isla Colon.

A couple can live here on as little as $16,800 a year, or $1,400 a month, renting a simple, snug, island-style home.

Bocas, as it is known, is all about water—fishing, water sports, and whale watching are just some of the popular pastimes for locals.

Expats living here tend to be very involved in island life. Some have started businesses helping fuel the island economy, some enjoy teaching local students, and others find time to volunteer for important causes or charities. Much good has come of this growth, and the community has worked to protect the natural surroundings, including local marine life such as sea turtles.

Bocas Del Toro is also a perfect place to test drive your dream Caribbean lifestyle. The expat community is welcoming, it’s organized, and it gives back.

Roatán, Honduras

Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands, lying about 35 miles off the Honduran coast. The island is most famous as a diving destination and retirement haven in the western Caribbean.

It ticks a lot of boxes—affordable, white-sand beaches, see-to-the-bottom Caribbean waters, warm weather, cooling sea breezes, and a laidback island vibe.

Although, Honduras is Spanish-speaking, thanks to its historical link to England—it was once a British colony—English is widely spoken on Roatán, making the island an easy place to fit in.

Regular flights in and out of the international airport, make Roatán accessible—it’s quick and easy to see family back home. But it’s still out of the mainstream, at least compared to other Caribbean island getaways, and that has kept prices affordable for real estate and living costs. A couple could live well on $30,000 a year—$2,000 to $2,500 a month.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres is about eight miles from Cancún in Mexico, but this relaxed island is a world away from the hustle and bustle of its more tourist-developed neighbor. It’s a place where golf carts are preferred to cars as the main means of transport.

The island enjoys a warm tropical climate (low to mid-80s F for most of the year), which means there is plenty to do on Isla Mujeres.

Naturally, water activities top the list as the nearby reef offers amazing opportunities for scuba, fishing, swimming, boating, and snorkeling. There’s even an underwater museum set up by an English sculptor to explore. And of course, there is the seasonal migration of whale sharks, which draws many to view and swim with them.

Clear, azure waters and white-sand beaches are never far away, and the cost of living is far lower than a similar lifestyle would cost back in the States. A couple can live a very nice life on Isla Mujeres for around $36,000 a year, or $2,500-$3,000 a month, including rent.

Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has great weather, world-class beaches and top golf courses, not to mention a low cost of living and a stable government. It’s also just three-and-a-half hours from New York, which means you can leave the city in the morning and be on the beach for lunch.

The north coast of the island has some of the finest beaches in the Caribbean, the east coast is a sportsman’s paradise with some of the newest designer golf courses in the region.
The little beach town of Las Terrenas in the northeast, on the Samana Penninsula, offers some of the most pristine beaches in the D.R. Here you’ll find 19 miles of public beaches, and palm trees swaying in the breeze.

French and Italian vacationers have been coming here for decades. Along with the hint of saltwater in the air and the scent of fresh-cut coconuts, you’ll smell French bread and croissants baking. The Italian influence is strong, too, with rich Italian gelato on offer and strong, Italian-style coffee.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Oct. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dutch energy storage and battery company Lithium Werks B.V. (www.lithiumwerks.com) and Chinese Zhejiang Jiashan Economic and Technological Development Zone Industry Corporation have signed a framework agreement with the intention to construct a 60 hectares battery gigafactory in the Yangtze river Delta. Total investments required are estimated at €1.6 billion. The Lithium Werks factory and related facilities will produce battery cells for lithium-ion batteries, enabling the energy transition from fossil fuels to clean energy in order to reduce CO[2] emissions.

Lithium Werks expects to have installed production capacity of 500 GWh per annum by 2030 as it continues to contribute to the shift to a carbon neutral world.

“With our Chinese partners’ help, and as we continue to grow both organically and through acquisitions, we will deliver the energy storage solutions that our customers increasingly ask for as the world transitions to clean energy,” said Koolen.

“We need safe, reliable, clean and sustainable energy storage. Batteries are an essential part of the energy transition. They enable us to store wind and solar energy to make it available whenever people need electricity,” said Kees Koolen, chairman of the board, Lithium Werks.

The agreement, which was signed in the presence of the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, marks the start of Lithium Werks’ plan to build multiple gigafactories across the world as part of a 15-to-20-year program that mirrors the long-term business models of the wind and solar industry.

Lithium Werks expects its revenue to exceed $1bn by 2020 as it continues to grow its share of the rapidly expanding market for energy storage.

During the next decade alone, we can expect demand for lithium-ion batteries to grow tenfold.* The battery industry will need to respond by constructing factories to deliver capacity in excess of 10,000 GWh in the next three decades.

“We are grateful and happy to work with our Chinese partners, the first to support our strategy to have a factory in their country. Speed of execution is key as is evidenced by building permit and other regulatory processes in China being completed within 100 days. Other countries and partners are invited to take up the dialogue in order to accelerate the roll out in other locations. We work closely with our customers to meet their specific energy storage requirements and are excited to develop new business relationships.” said Koolen.

Lithium Werks is committed to providing energy storage solutions that make electricity generated from renewable energy available when consumer need it, thus facilitating the global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.

Lithium Werks is working closely with the regional development organisation Oost NL, which has invested in the company, and with the University of Twente, with which it is developing a research campus that by around 2025 will employ some 2,000 engineers and other experts to focus on energy storage, transport and smart software.

"Significant investments are needed for an actual energy transition. The Chinese government has been working on clean energy plans for some time and their commitment confirms the crucial role that batteries play in this,” said Victor van der Chijs, rector of the University of Twente.

“Lithium Werks, with the University of Twente as a research partner, is an important player with a clear vision for a sustainable world. The University of Twente has been investing in sustainable energy research for years, including research into new materials that enable further innovation in battery technology,” he said.

Marius Prins, CEO, Oost NL said: "These developments show that Lithium Werks can grow into a company that makes an important contribution worldwide to the way we handle energy and energy storage. As the development company, we were among the first to invest in Lithium Werks. We firmly believe that Lithium Werks’ energy research R&D activities will contribute significantly to the strength of East Netherlands’ economy.”

Algal Omega-3 Innovators Ben Kelly of Algarithm Ingredients and Philip Bromley of Virun Nutra-Biosciences Speak at Algae Biomass Summit 2018

$

Their talk, entitled “Making Algal Omega-3’s Great Again” addressed next-generation demand for “vegan-friendly” foods, beverages, and supplements made with“ beautifully tasteless” DHA-rich ingredients derived from wild-sourced microalgae

SASKATOON, Canada (PRWEB) October 16, 2018

Founders of two of the functional food industry’s most innovative companies involved in the development and marketing of algae-based omega-3 products, Ben Kelly of Algarithm Ingredients and Philip Bromley of Virun Nutra-Biosciences, addressed attendees of the 2018 Algae Biomass Summit in Houston, Texas on October 15. The title of their presentation was “Making Algal Omega-3’s Great Again (O-MAGA)!”, during which they shared their history of successfully incorporating algae-derived omega-3s into foods, beverages, and dietary supplements, and also shared their thoughts and insights on growing the algal omega-3 market through strategic partnerships.

Around 2 years ago, well-aware of omega-3’s vital importance for the neurological development and overall health of growing children, and unwilling to give his own children omega-3 from marine sources because of potential contamination with heavy metals, Kelly became motivated to search out a non-fish source of omega-3; and discovered that the proper wild strain of algae grown using the proper protocol offered a clean, virtually odorless and tasteless source of omega-3 DHA. Kelly’s discovery led to the formation of his company, Algarithm, and shortly thereafter the formation of an industry-changing partnership with food, beverage, and supplement formulator and co-packager Philip Bromley of Virun Nutra-Biosciences.

Through the subsequent hard work of Kelly and Bromley and members of their teams, several novel algal omega-3 products were conceived that companies in the dietary supplement, food, and beverages sectors incorporated in their products. They include:· Vegan DHA Oil for Soft gels, Infant Formulas and Milks
· Alga omega-3 cold & heat tolerant Powders for use in foods such as baked goods, burgers, ice cream
· Flavored DHA emulsions for vegetarian smoothies and flavoring

In the market:· Alga omega-3 enriched O3 Omega Smoothies in familiar North American flavors such as smores and breakfast bacon (vegetarian & keto friendly)
· Alga omega-3 enriched Lemon Dill Salm’n Burger from Sol Cuisine (vegan)
· Alga omega-3 enriched plant-based chef-mastered seafood line from Good Catch Foods (launching in January)
· Alga omega3 Multi-Vitamin – Watch for launch announcement

“People who want clean diets are typically frustrated that they can’t find a plant-based omega-3 that is not completely free of GM ingredients. When we tell customers that our omega-3 is harvested from wild-sourced strains of algae swimming in the pristine waters of Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy, it fairly quickly puts their GMO concerns to rest,” said Kelly. “Omega-3 doesn’t get any cleaner or more natural than that.”

“Thanks to our friends at Algarithm, we now have access to a sustainable source of pollutant-free, plant-derived omega-3 DHA,” said Bromley. “The research we’ve done here at Virun enables us to easily introduce that health-promoting omega-3 fatty acid into foods, beverages, and nutritional supplements at an anticipated cost of less than $.10 per serving – and do it without creating a trace of fish taste, fish smell, or annoying fish burps. We were happy to be able to introduce folks at the Algae Biomass Summit to our process for creating great-tasting, DHA-enhanced foods and beverages, and dietary supplements. We believe the technology we’ve evolved opens the doors to a world of new, healthy, algal omega-3 enhanced consumer products.”

Bougainville will retain the aviation capability of the America-class design while adding the surface assault capability of a well deck. The well deck will give the U.S. Marine Corps the ability to house and launch two landing craft air cushion (LCAC) hovercraft or one landing craft utility (LCU) as needed during their maritime missions. Other additions to Bougainville include a larger flight deck configured for Joint Strike Fighter and Osprey V-22 aircraft, which can be used for surface and aviation assaults. The additional area on the flight deck comes in part from a smaller deck house and an additional sponson.

LHA 8 will be the second Navy vessel to bear the name Bougainville. The name commemorates the Bougainville Campaign that took place during World War II. During the campaign, which lasted from 1943 to 1944, Allied forces secured a strategic airfield from Japan in the northern Solomon Islands, helping the allies break the Japanese stronghold in the South Pacific.

Scarcity of Hilsa during Durga Puja upsets city Bengalis

Scarcity of Hilsa, a fish with distinct marine flavour and taste, has hit the city, upsetting many Bengali's during the festive season. The prized fish of Bengal is unavailable in the market, and fish sellers are struggling hard to order the stock and match up to the demand.

During Durga Puja, most Bengalis feast on Hilsa after the idol of Goddess Durga is immersed in the water. "It is a delicacy and marks an end of the festival," says Debomita Guha, a home-maker.

Hilsa is an important part of the wedding trousseau of most Bengalis, lying amidst jewellery, wrapped in a saree. No auspicious occasions including annaprashon (a child's first rice-eating ceremony), jamai shoshti (an annual ceremony where the sons-in-law are fed an elaborate meal), poila boishakh (Bengali new year), Durga puja, Kali puja, etc is deemed complete without Hilsa.

Mufid Kaladia, who runs Ahmedabadfish.com, said, "We get one day's fresh stock of fish from Veraval. However, the last Hilsa stock that we received was 20 days ago. There is a lot of demand due to Durga Puja but less supply. The Hilsa of Arabian sea costs around Rs 1000 whereas Hilsa of Bay of Bengal costs Rs 2500 per kilogram. This is the season of Hilsa as people avoid eating the fish between November and February."

He added, "I should be getting a few kilos in two days with a lot of difficulty."

The importance that Hilsa carries corroborated when Mamata Banerjee returned to power, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina greeted her with 20 kg of Hilsa.

Another fish seller from Teen Darwaja, Gitaben, who is into this business for generations said that she will be getting Hilsa post Dusshera. Speaking to dna, she said, "We get Hilsa from Narmada and it costs Rs 850. However, since the water in the river is very less, we are not getting the fish. I have been getting calls from Bengalis across the city inquiring about the fish but we will only be able to get post festival."

Right now, the only easily available fish in the market is Rohu. Even fresh Pomfret and Katla are not available regularly. This has affected our business, she added. September and October is the season for Hilsa and hence it's is the most expensive during this period.

Another resident, Akash Chodhury said, "Ilish Boron is a very important ritual during festivity. And I could not find the fish anywhere in the market."

Recommendations from national panel include a ban on oil and gas development in marine protected areas

OTTAWA, Oct. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- World Wildlife Fund Canada is keen to see the recommendations in this final report today from the National Advisory Panel on Marine Protected Area Standards pass into law, bringing Canada’s marine protected areas in line with international standards to better protect wildlife from human impacts.

WWF-Canada also strongly supports the panel’s recommendation to create or amend legislation to allow for the implementation of Indigenous Protected Areas, an important tool for protecting biodiversity while supporting Indigenous self-determination, cultural preservation and economic development.

Full implementation of the recommendations by the federal government would mean a ban on activities such as oil and gas development, bottom trawling and seabed mining in of all of Canada’s federal marine protected areas. However, marine refuges – created more quickly through a different process – would, potentially, remain open to these activities. More than half of Canada’s protected marine space, or 4.8 per cent of 7.9 per cent, are refuges rather than marine protected areas. WWF-Canada wants to see harmful activities kept out of marine refuges, too.

*T**he **n**ational **p**anel’s report recommends:** *

· Canada adopt International Union for Conservation of Nature standards for its federal marine protected areas. This means no oil and gas development, mining, dumping or bottom trawling.
· Government consultation with Canadians in all ocean regions on marine spatial planning.
· Integrating Indigenous knowledge meaningfully into all stages of the process of planning and managing protected areas (both MPAs and marine refuges), as well as supporting the creation and implementation of Indigenous Protected Areas.
· The federal government commit to greater transparency in reporting on the assessment and success of marine protected areas and create a central, open database to inform Canadians about marine protection measures.
· Allowing marine refuges, or other measures, to offer “flexible approaches” to conservation to accommodate economic development. WWF-Canada is concerned about what this might mean in terms of oil and gas development in marine refuges, which is already occurring.

*What WWF-Canada would like to see: ** *

· Changes to the Oceans Act and the Fisheries Act to ensure the National Panel’s recommendations are formalized and legally enforceable. Other changes may be needed for the National Marine Conservation Act, the Canada Wildlife Act and the Migratory Birds Convention Act.
· The cancellation of oil and gas leases inside present and proposed marine protected areas once the panel’s recommendations are adopted.
· Clarification of standards for marine refuges, also known as “other effective conservation measures,” to ensure harmful activities are kept out.
· More transparency in planning marine protection measures, especially with local communities, Indigenous peoples and stakeholders.

*Sigrid Kuehnemund, WWF-Canada vice-president of ocean conservation, said:** *

“World Wildlife Fund Canada is very pleased by the national panel’s strong recommendation that the government of Canada adopt international standards for marine protected areas. It’s up to the federal government now to pass these recommendations into law to ensure harmful activities such as oil and gas development, bottom trawling and seabed mining are kept out of areas set aside for conservation. Establishing stronger laws and regulations for protected areas is the best way to provide clarity for all ocean stakeholders and to ensure that Canada’s marine protection efforts are meaningful.

“WWF-Canada wants to see the recommendations for marine protected areas extend to marine refuges to ensure these measures provide real protections to habitats and species.

“We strongly support the creation and implementation of Indigenous Protected Areas and would also like the panel’s recommendations on greater transparency in ocean protection planning to be implemented.”

*WWF-Canada’s role** *

WWF-Canada works on marine protection on all three coasts and has worked for decades to keep harmful activities, such as oil and gas development, out of marine protected areas. Recent campaigns saw thousands of Canadians email the Prime Minister to ask for a ban on oil and gas in protected areas, including MPAs and marine refuges.
