In an unprecedented gesture of appreciation, Tom Crowley, chairman and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corp., recently presented a 2017 Thomas Crowley Award – the company’s highest honor – to the company’s entire Puerto Rico team in recognition of their heroic efforts to resume and sustain the flow of critical cargo from the U.S. mainland to the island following Hurricane Maria.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (PRWEB) June 07, 2018

In the aftermath of the September storm, Crowley’s more than 300 union and administrative employees resumed services and reopened company facilities, including a warehouse and the Isla Grande terminal, just two days after the storm passed. Within hours of the U.S. Coast Guard reopening the harbor in San Juan, Crowley began discharging government and commercial cargo from vessels to support relief efforts on the island.

The team was also recognized for its work over the past year helping to transform the company’s Isla Grande port terminal to a lift-on/lift-off operation and making it the most modern and efficient facility in the Caribbean. Employees adapted to and embraced change as they began working the new 900-foot pier, three ship-to-shore gantry cranes, expanded dry and refrigerated container facilities, truck access and egress gates, and terminal operating system, which has significantly decreased truck turn times and increased cargo velocity.

In an emotional presentation in San Juan, Crowley said to the assembled employees, “Each of you were personally impacted by the most destructive hurricane in the island’s history, yet you banded together to overcome extraordinary challenges and helped to reopen our terminal a mere 48 hours after the storm. Since then, you have continued to work tirelessly to get government relief and commercial cargoes to the island, to help people get back on their feet and begin rebuilding their homes and lives. It is with tremendous pride and appreciation that I present all of you with a 2017 Thomas Crowley Award.”

"Our employees are so grateful for this recognition and are particularly emotional knowing that they received it for contributions that made a difference to their families, friends, co-workers and, above all, Puerto Rico," said Crowley's Jose “Pache” Ayala, vice president, Puerto Rico services. "Crowley has a strong culture and this honor is testament that nothing is more important than our people, who are fully committed to this trade and the well-being of our island."

Humberto Negron, a Crowley stevedore and union steward for Union de Tronquistas de Puerto Rico local 901, said: "It took union members by surprise because it is the first time this recognition has been given to a team. Crowley has always been great at recognizing an employee’s hard work and it makes us feel even more honored and proud to have received this as a team."

Negron has worked as a union employee for Crowley since 1990, and he has two sons and a stepson who also work for the company.

The prestigious, annual company award is a limited-edition bronze sculpture that depicts company founder Thomas Crowley ferrying goods in a rowboat across San Francisco Bay in the early 1890s. The award serves not only as a tribute to the founder of the company, but also to those honorees who have aligned themselves closely with the company's values and display outstanding performance, dedication, leadership and initiative. Only 66 employees have received the award since the program’s inception in 1985.

“This award is truly gratifying as it recognizes the unending commitment that Crowley employees showed to restore the supply chains of customers and assist with the government response, despite facing their own personal and family challenges,” said Crowley’s Ken Black, vice president, warehousing and logistics. “We literally were helping each other as we dedicated ourselves to aiding the people of Puerto Rico. Not only did our warehousing operations on the island re-open within two days to support Puerto Rico 24/7, our team successfully tripled our warehouse capacity and added more than 600 transportation units to improve cargo turn times and have supplies distributed with unprecedented velocity. It was truly an around-the-clock, team effort as we helped people on the island begin to recover.”

Altogether, Crowley provided more than 200 sailings via U.S. Jones Act vessels after the storm, delivering more than 100,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The company increased vessel capacity by 67 percent to handle the surge in cargo and provided nearly 24/7 operations at the terminal and warehouses on the island. As a leading logistics provider for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Crowley transported and delivered more than 53,000 utility poles, 7,000 transformers and 10 million miles of cable to support power restoration on the main island of Puerto Rico and in surrounding communities, such as the island of Vieques. Additionally, more than 3,200 containers of water were delivered among other food products and supplies to aid residents.

"ePropulsion is revolutionising the industry and democratising access to the oceans"

HONG KONG, June 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Hong Kong-focused venture capital fund Beyond Ventures has joined forces with Brizan Investments to spearhead a US$10 million investment in the ePropulsion Innovation (ePropulsion), which was conceived at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) by four budding entrepreneurs.

ePropulsion manufactures a full range of environment-friendly electric propulsion kits for water sports enthusiasts and already sells products in more than 30 markets in Europe, the US, Australia and Asia.

The company's star offering is the Navatics MITO -- a 4K subsea drone that shoots ultra-stable underwater photos and video – which will benefit from the funding in terms of enhanced manufacturing, sales, marketing and distribution.

ePropulsion CEO Danny Tao said: "We are thrilled to be partnering with like-minded investors such as Beyond Ventures and Brizan Investments co-founded by Professor Ping K Ko, who is former Dean of the School of Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and well known for investing in consumer electronics."

He added: "Visuals and data captured by our newly-launched underwater drone will transform the world's understanding of our oceans, while delivering insights into issues such as fish populations, acidification and climate change -- matters that will affect every single person on the planet."

Adopting the slogan "From Hong Kong For Hong Kong", Beyond Ventures is the only venture capital fund focused solely on Hong Kong, and seeks to revitalise the local innovation ecosystem by bringing venture and private equity funds together with entrepreneurs to nurture start-ups.

Beyond Ventures Co-Founder and Managing Partner Lap Man likened ePropulsion to Dà-Jiāng Innovations (DJI), the world's leading producer of camera drones and photography systems, because it was founded by a HKUST graduate. Lap Man said: "Beyond Ventures is determined to make sure ePropulsion is not forced to take the same route as DJI."

He added: "ePropulsion is revolutionising the industry, while democratising access to the oceans – which remain largely unexplored -- and we are delighted to be a part of this transformational journey. We believe the capital and expertise provided by Beyond Ventures and Brizan Investments will help ePropulsion expand and become a truly global brand."

ePropulsion comprises a group of innovators who believe eMobility will create a brighter future and that electric propulsion is an inevitable trend on and in water.

Lap Man, who is also Founder and CEO of DYXnet Group -- Greater China's leading carrier-neutral network service provider -- said: "Beyond Ventures is not just about seeking return on investment – we also want to bring about a positive impact on society."

Sustainable Seafood Initiative from Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Recognised by MSC Certification

Sustainable Seafood Initiative from Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Recognised by MSC Certification *Shangri-La Hotels* and Resorts today announced it has received full* Marine Stewardship Council* (MSC) seafood Chain of Custody certification (CoC) for all its 53 properties across Mainland China and Hong Kong. As the first hotel group in Asia, the Shangri-La group initiated the certification programme as part of its sustainable sourcing strategy and commitment to protect future seafood supplies and make a positive impact on the environment.

*Mr. Andy Chan, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Senior Director of F&B, Greater China, Receiving MSC Ecolabel*

The MSC runs the only wild-capture fisheries certification and ecolabelling programme that meets best practice requirements set by both the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) and ISEAL, the global membership association for sustainability standards. The MSC is also the only global seafood certification programme to be recognised as credible by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI).

With a total of 53 hotels participating, Shangri-La has the greatest number of properties in Asia certified by the MSC. Critical to the collaboration is the highlighting of sustainably sourced seafood selections on the hotels’ restaurant menus. Guests can identify these culinary offerings by the trusted MSC ecolabel printed alongside the dish description, which indicates the seafood is from MSC-certified fisheries and suppliers. MSC certification means the seafood was sustainably fished-it is fully traceable from a legal fishery, which has proven minimal impacts on the marine environment and other species, including threatened or endangered species and juvenile fish.

“By being the first to partner with the MSC in Asia, we hope to galvanize others in the hotel industry to join us in offering certified sustainable seafood to make a positive impact in the world collectively,” said *Shangri-La President & COO Oliver Bonke*. “Providing our guests locally and ethically sourced food offerings has been a priority since we launched Rooted in Nature, our culinary sustainability initiative, in 2014. Our partnership with the MSC is the next milestone in our journey.”*Rupert Howes, Chief Executive of the MSC*, said, “The leadership shown by Shangri-La is a visible commitment to meeting the highest globally recognised standards for seafood sustainability and traceability. The MSC ecolabel assures hotel guests that seafood is sustainably caught and can be traced back to a certified fishery. We applaud Shangri-La for the huge effort that went into achieving MSC certification for 53 hotels, and for their ongoing efforts to engage diners on the importance of choosing sustainable seafood.”

The Shangri-La group recognises that overfishing is a threat to the state of the oceans, which will struggle to meet the demands of Asia and China – the world’s largest seafood consumers, whose population accounts for one-third of all fish consumption. This new certification will allow guests of Shangri-La to make sustainable and healthy choices.

The significant step Shangri-La is taking to have the greatest number of hotels in Asia certified by the MSC enables the group to stay ahead of emerging issues and enhance its Rooted in Nature culinary initiative, which was introduced in 2014 to highlight ethically and responsible sourced food offerings.*About Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts*

Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, one of the world’s premier hotel owners and operators, currently manages over 100 hotels in 22 countries and 76 destinations under the Shangri-La, Kerry, Hotel Jen and Traders brands. Prominently positioned in Asia, the group has established its hallmark of “*hospitality from the heart*” over four decades in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, North America and the Indian Ocean. The group has a substantial development pipeline with upcoming projects in Australia, Bahrain, mainland China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

*About the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)*

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organization established to address the problem of unsustainable fishing and safeguard seafood supplies for the future. The vision is of the world's oceans teeming with life and seafood supplies safeguarded forever. The MSC program is recognised by the UN as an important tool to achieve targets set for Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14): Life Below Water.China is a key market in the MSC’s global strategy and, to date, more than 300 MSC labelled products are sold by Chinese retailers and ecommerce platforms. Drawing on 20 years’ experience in the global market, MSC China will continue to create connections between global sustainable seafood suppliers and Chinese retailers, hotels and food service providers, to provide more sustainable, traceable seafood to Chinese consumers. Ocean Institute and Connected Camps release video June 8 and encourage young people to take part in social media activation.

(PRWEB) June 08, 2018

In an effort to raise awareness of marine conservation, the Ocean Institute and Connected Camps are inviting young people to take part in a Minecraft social media activation on World Oceans Day June 8.

A video, featuring Minecraft’s new Aquatic Update and fun facts curated by the Ocean Institute, will debut on Connected Camps’ social media channels — YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Kids are encouraged to watch and share the video using the hashtag, #WorldOceansDay, in their own social media posts throughout the day. To top off the collaboration, for every social media share, the Ocean Institute will bring a low-income student from Southern California to its headquarters in Dana Point for a free field trip to visit the ocean for the first time.

“We are thrilled to partner with Connected Camps and to see kids using the tools that are important to them — and their peers — to celebrate our ocean,” said Wendy Marshall, vice president of education at the Ocean Institute. “With 95% of the ocean yet to be explored and many threats to the ocean health, we need to develop the next generation of innovators and discoverers. We believe that the habits of mind that students develop through the learning experiences that Connect Camps offers are the very attributes that are needed! Curiosity, creativity, persistence, collaboration, and flexibility will be critical to furthering our knowledge of the ocean and solving the most pressing problems. Ocean Institute is thankful to the students who are participating and are using their creativity to engage others.”

"Indeed," said Mimi Ito, Connected Camps founder and director of the Connected Learning Lab at the University of California, Irvine.

“We are seeking to connect kids’ enthusiasm for Minecraft to science and civic engagement in conservation,” she said. “The new aquatic patch lets us meet kids where they are, having fun with their friends, and connect them to these new potential areas of interest. It’s about educators and civic activists fishing where the fish are already swimming, so to speak.”

Connected Camps is a nonprofit organization that teaches STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) concepts through Minecraft. When Microsoft/Mojang recently released Update Aquatic for Minecraft, Connected Camps teamed with the Ocean Institute and the Connected Learning Alliance and started using the game to teach kids about some core principles of ocean conservancy while they explore the new update to the game. Its campers now are making content and participating in the global conversation about the conservation of the world's oceans.

“The Update Aquatic fills the oceans of Minecraft with marine life, shipwrecks and more, giving players a whole new world to explore. It’s great to see Connected Camps using this release to encourage young people to learn about environmental issues. Later this month, we will bring Update Aquatic to Minecraft: Education Edition, empowering educators with a series of new lessons to engage students in reef biology and conservation,” said Deirdre Quarnstrom, general manager of Minecraft Education at Microsoft.

“It’s about kids becoming creators of digital culture, and finding their voice and understanding that through the connected nature of our world, our voice travels,” Ito added. “The overall theme is around how community-based, interest-driven learning helps kids learn and develop new passions in their lives outside of the game.”

About Connected Camps
Connected Camps is a benefit corporation providing connected learning experiences that foster creativity, problem solving, collaboration and interest-driven learning. Its mission is to build a global online community where kids build, code, play, and learn from one another. First Sustainable Seaweed Program Specifically for the Hydrocolloid Industry Developed in Collaboration with the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium Will Set New Industry Standards

BOSTON (PRWEB) June 08, 2018

As one of the world’s largest buyers of seaweed, DuPont Nutrition & Health (DuPont N&H) works to ensure its products are produced in ways that protect the ecosystems and communities in which the business operates. To mark World Oceans Day, DuPont N&H today announced a unique new seaweed program that will guide seaweed farmers and harvesters toward the adoption of more sustainable practices. Developed in collaboration with the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium, the program is the first sustainable seaweed program specifically for the hydrocolloid industry.

“Seaweed is one of the principal raw materials in the hydrocolloid industry, and our goal is to see these sustainable management practices implemented worldwide,” said Erick Ask seaweed development manager, DuPont Nutrition & Health. “Some would call this goal ambitious, but we want to help educate all seaweed farmers and harvesters to develop a working knowledge of sustainable practices and enhance their ability to be good stewards of their farms and seaweed beds, upon which they depend for their livelihoods and their family’s future.”

Designed to assure the environmental and social criteria of sustainability and bring transparency throughout the complex supply chain, the standards will help preserve the environment as well as conditions for the seaweed producers. In collaboration with Anderson Cabot Center scientists, DuPont N&H developed the standards to strive to ensure the most environmentally friendly practices are followed and seaweed producers in every corner of the world receive fair treatment and work safely.

The Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium was the ideal partner to develop the program. The organization previously worked with seafood processing and retailing companies to create the Fisheries and Aquaculture Solutions Program, which helps to develop sustainable practices around seafood sourcing.

Chief Scientist and Vice President of the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life John Mandelman, Ph.D., said: “Improving the environmental performance of seaweed has cascading benefits for coastal communities and habitats as well as for species far beyond seaweed. In taking a science-based approach to both create and continually improve these guidelines, we hope to make a difference in sustainability across the entire seaweed extract market.”

DuPont N&H is implementing the Sustainable Seaweed Program first in Norway and Iceland, eventually expanding the program to other regions where seaweeds are sourced. Additionally, employees from DuPont N&H seaweed processing plants and blending facilities are collecting trash and other debris along shorelines on four continents in recognition of World Oceans Day. The cleanup efforts represent a small contribution to the much larger need for corporations around the world to join in the preservation and protection of the ocean, one of earth’s most valuable resources.

“This is just a continuation of our journey,” Ask said. “We’ve always been a leader in developing industrywide practices, from inventing aquaculture of carrageenan seaweed in the Philippines nearly 50 years ago to the implementation of biology-based management of alginate seaweed in Norway over 50 years ago. It’s what we do. It’s in our DNA.”

World Oceans Day is an annual observation that takes place around the world on June 8 to honor, help protect and conserve the world’s oceans.

Silversea Expeditions Celebrates 10 Years of Pioneering Exploration and Destination Leadership

Silversea, an innovator in the ultra-luxury cruise industry, celebrated 10 years of expedition cruising on June 3.

MIAMI (PRWEB) June 08, 2018

On June 3, Silversea Expeditions proudly celebrated 10 years of luxurious expedition cruising, marking the occasion with a two-day gala voyage between London and Dublin. On this momentous day, the ultra-luxury Silver Cloud departed London’s Tower Bridge amid great elation to honor Silversea Expeditions’ very first voyage, which sailed under Tower Bridge for Svalbard a decade ago to the day.

In a nod to the company's continued focus on innovation, Silver Cloud, which was the first vessel in Silversea’s fleet and was reimagined as an elegant ice-class expedition ship in late 2017, crossed paths with Silver Spirit - Silversea’s recently lengthened and renovated ship - in Greenwich, London.

The array of enrichments aboard Silver Cloud’s celebratory voyage included a congratulatory video message from HSH Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, who had cut the ribbon in Monte Carlo during the naming ceremony for Silversea's first expedition ship in 2008. Originally named Prince Albert II in tribute to His Serene Highness and his environmental efforts, the ship sails today as Silver Explorer and continues a legacy of sustainable tourism.

"We are delighted to be celebrating this important milestone," says Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, Silversea's Chairman. "I am glad to see that my vision has been successfully realized and we are now recognized for our destination leadership. Since the launch of our expedition itineraries, we have connected people with the world’s most spectacular landscapes and cultures, and, in the process, we have fostered respect and greater care for our planet and its inhabitants. I am very proud of my team and our mission. We will continue to scout new destinations to bring innovation to the world of expedition cruising."

Over the last 10 years, the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and humanitarian efforts has extended across the globe, in many forms: in the Cook and Phoenix islands in 2015, guests of Silversea participated in a mammal acoustic survey that successfully added three new species of animals to the national registry; in Bangladesh, where Silver Discoverer made the first-ever cruise ship call in 2017, Silversea visited a remote village where guests purchased regional produce to benefit the local community; and in 2017, when Silversea engaged in a partnership with ORCA, one of the U.K.'s leading marine conservation charities, to enable guests to discover incredible marine life and contribute to the charity’s ongoing conservation work. In the Galápagos Islands, where Silver Galapagos inaugurated ultra-luxury expedition experiences in 2014, Silversea will co-sponsor a camp for children to encourage the conservation of marine habitats.

Looking ahead, the future of ultra-luxury expedition cruising is in safe hands with Silversea. With a Northeast Passage crossing planned, and additional voyages to the Bay of Bengal, the Russian Far East, Antarctica, and Australia's Kimberley Coast, among others, the cruise line will continue to push industry boundaries. Of special note are two Silver Discoverer cruises that depart in summer 2019 for Borneo's Camp Leakey – a renowned refuge for orangutans, to which the cruise company enjoys exclusive access and has made various donations to support the protection and research of the primates.

Efforts to champion environmental sustainability are currently, and will continue to be, key in Silversea’s strategic development. Silversea is a member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO), which is dedicated to managing respectable, sustainable and safe expedition cruising in the Arctic. Moreover, the cruise line belongs to the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), which promotes safe and responsible travel to Antarctica.

In the past decade, Silversea has developed innovative strategies - such as a dedicated training academy - to recruit an unparalleled team of expedition specialists. This has played a crucial role in the cruise line’s success. On each expedition voyage, teams of up to 28 experts conduct immersive destination experiences for guests. Populations of fish in the ocean are notoriously variable, waxing and waning in often unpredictable ways. Knowing what drives changes in fish population sizes is important for managing fisheries and conserving species. For the first time, scientists have linked the ecology of adult fish populations inhabiting coral reefs with the dispersal of baby fish between reefs, reporting the dynamics of a living network called a 'marine metapopulation.' KEMP, Texas, June 08, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Larson Electronics LLC, Industrial lighting expert, has released a new 27-watt explosion proof LED forklift zone light ideal for hazardous locations such as warehouses and delivery bays for illuminative safety. This unit produces 2,350 lumens of intense red light to indicate the pathway of the forklift, warning pedestrians and other vehicles of ongoing operation. The EXHL-TRN-ZN-LE9-FKLT-RED from Larson Electronics is a 27-watt explosion proof LED forklift zone light which produces 2,350 lumens of intense red light as a real-time notification to nearby pedestrians and works of ongoing forklift operation. Standard forklift warning systems have strobe lights that can hinder operator visibility and/or audible alarms which can irritate workers and pedestrians who must listen to the constant beeping. The EXHL-TRN-ZN-LE9-FKLT-RED addresses both issues. The LEDs in this unit are combined with high purity optics to produce a narrow 5º spot beam, visible during the day and night. This explosion proof LED light operates on 10-100V DC and is compatible a range of standard forklift voltages including 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V.

The EXHL-TRN-ZN-LE9-FKLT-RED housing is constructed of extruded aluminum and NEMA Type 3, 4, 4X, 7 (B,C,D) and 9 (E,F,G) rated and IP66 rated. An unbreakable polycarbonate lens covers the red LED light. This unit can operate in temperatures of -20° C to 60° C and is inherently resistant to shock and vibration. An Adjustable trunnion mount allows operators to control the tilt and rotation of the LED.

“Compared to laser safety lights, this explosion proof zone light is wider for enhanced visibility,” said Rob Bresnahan, CEO of Larson Electronics LLC. “Also, using a red steady burn LED eliminates distracting strobing lights and constant alarms, while still efficiently notifying workers and pedestrians of the ongoing forklift operation.”

Cleaning the seabed: Divers halt the carnage of 'ghost' nets

POROS, Greece (AP) — There are ghosts in the ocean. Silent killers carried by the currents, wrapping themselves around reefs and claiming the lives of millions of marine creatures great and small, from sponges and tiny crustaceans to dolphins, sharks and whales. In their former lives, these ghosts were nets and other fishing gear essential to the livelihoods of millions around the world, and put food on the plates of millions more. But once lost, abandoned or discarded into the sea, these nets continue doing what they were designed to do: catch fish. Mostly made of strong plastic such as nylon, this lost gear known as ghost nets doesn't easily decompose. Reported by SeattlePI.com 20 hours ago.

DETAINED AND DEFLAGGED - WORLD'S LARGEST FISH FACTORY VESSEL RENDERED STATELESS

The Damanzaihao – a pirate “super-fishing” vessel – arrested and seized in Peru and now struck off the Marine Registry of Belize.

Loas Angeles, California, June 08, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- *Chimbote, Peru – June 7th, 2018 -* In the latest setback for the colossal 50,000 ton pirate ship, Belize has revoked the registration of the Damanzaihao, the largest fish factory vessel in the world.

The International Marine Registry of Belize (IMMARBE) stripped the Damanzaihao of its flag, at the request of Sea Shepherd Legal (SSL), for failing to appropriately complete its vessel registration materials and notify Belize of its record of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, according to a statement issued Wednesday.

The move renders the vessel stateless, according to marine conservation group Sea Shepherd, who has been working to get the vessel arrested and de-listed in the region.

Sea Shepherd's Captain Paul Watson stated “Sea Shepherd will work hard to ensure that other potential flag states follow suit should the Damanzaihao ever be allowed to leave Peruvian waters. If it ends up on the other side of the world, I hope it is in the form of paperclips, after it has been scrapped”.

The Damanzaihao is the largest fish factory vessel in the world, capable of processing 547,000 tons of fish per year. In February 2015, The South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization or, SPRFMO , declared the vessel a 'pirate' and added the Damanzaihao to its lists of vessels involved in illegal, undeclared and unregulated fishing, after detecting an unauthorized trans-shipment and false reporting to authorities about cargo of frozen Pacific mackarel. . Pacific Mackerel stocks have collapsed in recent years, being caught increasingly for reduction into feed for the salmon farming industry.

Last week Peruvian authorities initiated a criminal investigation into China Fishery Group and detained the vessel in the El Ferrol bay, Chimbote.

The ship is being held for a period of 70 days for allegedly polluting the Peruvian sea and for criminal charges relating to IUU Fisheries Crimes spanning from South America to New Zealand.

Ministerio Publico Fiscalia de la Nacion said fines for the vessel could be up to $7 million USD (€6 million) for the damage.

Peruvian prosecutors and ministry officials are actively working with Sea Shepherd to defend the ongoing detention of the Damanzaihao pending a criminal investigation, with a hearing on the detention status scheduled for Monday, June 14.

In April, bankrupt China Fishery Group, said it would sell the controversial vessel to Singapore-based DVS-R PTE, in a New York Bankruptcy Court. Sea Shepherd has received documents affirming the sale has gone ahead within Peruvian waters, despite the vessel's intention to slip port prior to the completion of sale.

Over the past two weeks, the Damanzaihao had twice requested permission to leave port in an obvious attempt to escape the tightening noose.

On April 20, 2018, Sea Shepherd delivered a formal letter to the Peruvian Ministry of Production (the agency that issued the multi-million dollar fine) imploring the government to take additional steps to ensure the ship pay for its crimes, and informing the authorities the vessel would likely flee offshore and shirk its responsibilities.

Sea Shepherd Vessel M/V John Paul DeJoria was recently in Peruvian waters, investigating and gathering intelligence to assist the Peruvian Government, in its fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (“IUU”) fishing.

Sea Shepherd commends the governments of Peru and Belize and their commitment to combatting IUU Fishing.

Sea Shepherd is steadfast in its resolve to stop the Damanzaihao from destroying marine ecosystems across the planet.
