Breakup Of Antarctic Ice Shelf Exposes Hidden Ecosystem

Breakup Of Antarctic Ice Shelf Exposes Hidden Ecosystem After months of almost but not quite breaking away from Antarctica, a trillion-ton chunk of the Larsen C Ice Shelf finally detached itself in July and drifted off into the Southern Ocean. As it so happens, this chilly divorce may have been a good thing, as it’s exposed a brand-new, never-before-seen ecosystem hiding just beneath the waves, IFL Science reports. It’s never ideal when ice shelves disintegrate. They expose the glaciers behind them to open waters, where they can fall in and push up sea levels. However, researchers working at various institutions, from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, and the Korea... MEXICO CITY (AP) — U.S. Navy-trained dolphins and their handlers arrived in Mexico Thursday to participate in a last-ditch effort to catch, enclose and protect the last few dozen surviving vaquita porpoises to save them from extinction. Mexican authorities and an international group of experts say they will set out on Oct. 12 in a fleet of small boats to find the critically endangered and elusive marine mammals with the assistance of the dolphins. Mexican Environment Secretary Rafael Pacchiano said the U.S. government "has been a great ally in this process, in this unprecedented project. Reported by SeattlePI.com 12 hours ago.

Microsoft is Oracle's real competitor, not Amazon, according to this analyst (ORCL, MSFT, AMZN)

Microsoft is Oracle's real competitor, not Amazon, according to this analyst (ORCL, MSFT, AMZN) Oracle loves to pick fights with Amazon Web Services in the database and cloud markets, but the enemy it should really take aim at is Microsoft, according to one analyst.

"Microsoft is their big competitor," says Larry Carvalho, lead analyst on platform-as-a-service at IDC.

Amazon may be a giant in the cloud world but Microsoft is a bigger threat to the types of big business customers that Oracle depends on.

"Oracle is about two to three years behind Microsoft," Carvalho tells Business Insider.

*Pick your battle*

Earlier this week, when Oracle announced its newest database, the Oracle 18c, chairman Larry Ellison called it the first "fully-autonomous" and "self-driving" database on the market. But to Carvalho, that claim doesn't mean much in a market full of semi-autonomous databases, like Microsoft Azure's SQL.

"Oracle," Carvalho said, "is just catching up."

While certain functions on the Oracle 18c may be new, such as its reported ability to autonomously patch cybersecurity flaws, the heart of Oracle's new product is machine learning. Microsoft launched Azure SQL, which self-tunes and recommends security fixes, in March 2016.

The competition, according to Carvalho, will now come down to which customers Oracle is chasing. While Amazon might steal business from Oracle when it comes to Java workloads, Microsoft has the advantage when it comes to .NET workloads. The Oracle-owned Java and Microsoft-owned .NET are the two main frameworks used for building database applications.

*Open strategy*

Oracle's best hope for winning, Carvalho reckons, is to hammer home the message that it supports open source software and that its product plays nice with everyone, working with tech from different manufacturers.

"The whole open source story that Oracle is pushing might draw new customers, but they'll have to show differentiation about why Oracle and not Microsoft," Carvalho said. "It has potential, but I haven't seen anything come out of it."

For now, however, Oracle is presenting the market as an issue of pricing. In his keynote, Ellison mostly focused on the price of its services compared to Amazon Web Service's. Ellison promised to include a clause in its contracts that says it will cost less than half of what Amazon charges for the same service.

Amazon fired back on Monday, describing Ellison's presentation as "no facts, wild claims, and lots of bluster."

TOKYO, Oct 6, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced a change, effective October 1, 2017, to its visual identity (VI) used in communication areas(1) for its power products business. With the change, different sets of VI being used for different categories of power products will be replaced by the Honda logo, which will now be used for all categories of Honda power products. Through the unified use of the Honda logo, which represents the Honda brand and has already been used on various Honda power products, Honda will strive to strengthen the brand of its power products business all around the world.

Paul Craig Roberts Asks "Was The Las Vegas Shooting A False Flag?"

$

Paul Craig Roberts Asks Was The Las Vegas Shooting A False Flag? Authored by Paul Craig Roberts,

Dear Readers, I appreciate the confidence that you show in me with your emails asking my opinion about the Las Vegas shooting. *Many of you suspect that it is another false flag affair, and you ask me about its purpose.*

*I don’t know if it was a false flag attack, and if so, by who or for what purpose. I don’t expect to ever know. A story is set in place by officials and media. The only way to ever know is to personally investigate.* You would have to go to Las Vegas, examine the scene, ask questions of the hotel, investigate the answers if you get any, find and interview concert attendees who were shot, attend funerals and see bodies of those killed, speak to their families, learn about the weapon allegedly used, experience trying to shoot at targets far below and far away, compare the number of casualties with the recorded time of firing, and so forth. In other words, we would have to do the job that in former times would have been done by the press, but no more.

*It is almost like the story is being kept from us.*

For example, from media reports that the event was just across the street from the hotel, I did not know that “across the street” was a distance of 390 yards (1,170 feet).

As I don’t expect to ever have a confident opinion about what happened, I am not paying much attention to the mass shooting, or should I say alleged shooting. We are lied to and deceived so much that we can never tell when we are told the truth. It is like Dmitry Orlov says:

*“Lies beget other lies, and pretty soon unbiased intelligence-gathering, rational analysis and proper mission planning become impossible.”*

” … a reputation for telling the truth can only be lost exactly once, and from then on the use of the phrase “US intelligence sources” became synonymous with “a conspiracy of barefaced liars.””

*“Whatever message Washington and Western mass media are trying to push, a perfectly valid response is to point out all the times they have lied in the past, and to pose a simple question: When did they stop lying?”*

Official explanations of such events as Las Vegas, Sandy Hook, and so forth, always throw up red flags, because the official explanations always studiously ignore contrary eyewitness and other evidence. Also, often there are not even smart phone videos of dead and wounded people. As far as I can tell, the bodies of 573 dead and wounded are absent in the Las Vegas video evidence. Considering the suspicion that such events cause, one would think the authorities would make a special effort to show the dead and wounded. In other cases of mayhem, alleged bodies look like dummies or are covered and could be a pile of anything. The presence of crisis actors on the scene, as in the Boston Marathon Bombing, raise more questions. I remember when it was expected that police and media would investigate all evidence and clear away contradictions. Now all we get is an official story instantly ready and repeated endlessly by officials and media. This itself raises suspicions.

You will have to make up your own minds about Las Vegas.

*Here are some of the reported facts to consider:*

*The victims killed and wounded total 573. That number is the size of a military battalion. It is very difficult to turn an entire battalion into casualties with small arms fire even in a fierce combat situation. I don’t know if it has ever happened. Can one person with no military training shooting down from 32 stories, which requires special sighting knowledge, at a distance of 390 yards - the length of 4 football fields - hit 573 people in a few minutes of firing?*

Jon Rappoport doesn’t believe it.

Neither does the progressive Steve Lendman.

There are reports of *multiple shooters.*

There are reports of gun flashes from the 4th floor.

The windows on the hotel do not open and would require the glass to be broken.

Stephen Paddock *doesn’t fit the profile of a psychopath*. Reports are he was a multimillionaire with airplanes and his own pilot. He enjoyed life. His brother is dumbfounded, said it makes no sense Stephen did the shooting.

The Mandalay Bay Hotel is reportedly a casino. If so, security cameras are everywhere. *Why no videos* of Stephen Paddock carrying in the many cases of 23 firearms and ammunition? How could maid service clean the room for three days and not see 23 firearms and their ammunition? Makes no sense.

*Why 23 guns? The number is beyond superfluous. *

*The large number almost suggests that the entire event is concocted as a gun control incident. The huge number of guns, the huge number of casualties. Finally, at last, enough “gun violence” to get gun control.*

Skeptics are waiting to hear from the authorities how a person at such a distance managed to shoot so many people in such a short time and with what automatic rifle and caliber the deed was done. As this part of the story is especially difficult to believe, we will probably not get the explanation.

And it is not only the authorities and the presstitutes that truth is up against. There is also the lack of integrity in people with axes to grind. For example, Paul Street writing in CounterPunch says: “The Las Vegas massacre is just the latest in the Gun Lobby’s long line of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.” The article is titled:  “The NRA’s Latest Terrorist Attack on U.S. Soil.”

*The gun control lobby has a massive vested interest in the official story. *You can bet your life that the gun control lobby will ignore any and all problems associated with the official story. The story is exactly what they want in order to advance their cause. *The campaign is underway*.

As Paddock is a rich white male, the story also fits with Identity Politics. Paddock is another example of the evil white male. Here is the Identity Politics connection served up by the Washington Post:

*“All across America white men, some young, some of middle-age, are turning into wolves.* Always, after they commit acts of terror, it is revealed out that these perpetrators were not men after all. They were beasts, mindless monsters whose evil was abstract and cold and terrible.”

CNN says* mass shootings are “a white man’s problem.” *See “How America has silently accepted the Rage of White Men:”

*People are more interested in confirming their beliefs and prejudices than they are in the truth. *If Paddock were a Muslim, Islamophobic people would cling to the official account.

Truth requires that people believe in truth more than they believe in their own biases and causes. In the United States, such people are increasingly rare.

*Remember always the Roman question: “Who benefits?” *That is where you will find the answer.

*  *  *

*UPDATE:* Paddock’s girlfriend describes him as a “kind, caring, quiet” man who she envisioned a “quiet future” with. A woman knows a man. Her description is not one of a psychopath.

*I have spoken to more experienced persons and experts including US Marine snipers. They don’t believe a word of the official story. *Will, once again, the experts be got rid of by branding them “conspiracy theorists” as was done to 3,000 architects and engineers who challenge the official story of 9/11? SINGAPORE - Media OutReach - 6 October 2017 - Chubb announced today its partnership with StarHub, an integrated info-communications company in Singapore, to launch a new product -- HomeInsured^TM. The latter is^a complimentary 12-month insurance plan which provides coverage for renovations, fixtures, fittings and home contents for StarHub customers.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force's Fire Incident Statistics for 2016, there are seven cases of residential fires in Singapore each day. In addition, a joint survey with StarHub also revealed that 6 in 10 customers do not have any home contents insurance. Mr. Clifford added, "At Chubb, we continually strive to provide relevant protection for our customers. Given the lack of awareness in home contents insurance in Singapore, we are very excited at the opportunity to partner with StarHub to offer their customers complimentary home contents insurance when they sign up for or re-contract any StarHub Home Broadband, TV and/or HomeHub service. Unlike fire insurance which normally only covers structure and permanent fixtures, with our HomeInsured starter pack, we hope that every StarHub household can enjoy StarHub's services with peace of mind by being Chubb insured."

Mr. Howie Lau, Chief Marketing Officer of StarHub said "We are constantly challenging ourselves to find ways to better serve our customers and exceed their expectations. The Curious Case Of USS McCain – Analysis

$

By Vijay Shankar*

On 21 August 2017, in the darkness of astronomical twilight, USS John S McCain, a destroyer bound for Singapore after a sensitive ‘freedom-of-navigation’ operation off one of China’s illegal man-made islands in the South China Sea (SCS), collided with a 30,000-ton oil and chemical tanker, Alnic MC, in the eastern approaches to Singapore. 10 sailors lost their lives in the collision while the hull of the ill-fated McCain was stricken by a large trapezium-shaped puncture on its port quarter abaft the after stack. The greater base of the trapezium was below the waterline and extended at least 40 feet along the hull to a height of 15 feet. Two months earlier, a similar collision involving another Arleigh Burke destroyer could advance a more-than-accident theory.

Initial reports suggest a loss of course-keeping control caused the McCain’s fatal collision. That, and the computer-aided nature of the ship’s steering and navigation system, has led to the conjecture that McCain’s manoeuvring system may have been ‘hacked’ and then manipulated to force a deliberate collision.

The Singapore Strait extends between the Strait of Malacca and the SCS in the east. The Strait is about 8 nautical miles (15 km) wide and lies between Singapore Island and the Riau Islands (Indonesia) to the south. It is one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) periodically warns mariners of the special rules applicable for safe pilotage in these waters. In one of its marine circulars, it draws attention to the traffic separation scheme (TSS) and the hazardous character of these waters. By law, the significant burden placed on vessels is: to proceed in the appropriate traffic lane in the general direction of flow; to keep clear of traffic separation lines or zones; and cardinally, masters of vessels are warned to take extra precautions and proceed at a safe speed. In determining safe speed, experience advocates several factors be considered, which, in addition to traffic density, include: state of visibility; manoeuvrability of the vessel; state of wind, sea and current; proximity of navigational hazards and draught in relation to the available depth of water. In the circumstance, the prudent mariner very quickly appreciates that the primary hazard presented by the narrows is not geography, but density of traffic and the perils of disorderly movement. On an average, 200-220 ships transit this passage daily of which more than 100 are restricted in their ability to manoeuvre due to deep draught.

The organisation on board a warship for negotiating such waters are the Special Sea Dutymen; a group of highly specialised and trained personnel charged with manning critical control positions involved in evolutions that potentially could endanger the ship, such as berthing, transiting pilotage waters and close-quarter manoeuvring. Instancy of human judgement and fail-safe control are key.

A standard fit on most United States Navy (USN) warships is the Integrated Platform Management Systems (IPMS). It uses advanced computer-based technology comprising sensors, actuators, data processing for information display and control operations. Its vital virtue is distant remote control through commercial off-the-shelf elements (some may argue its ‘critical vulnerability’). Modern shipping, for reasons only of economy, was quick to adopt the system. Warships systems, however, demand redundancy, reliability, survivability and unremitting operations; all of which militate against cost-cutting expediencies. Incidentally, the Indian Navy, as early as May 1997, introduced the IPMS as a part of Project ‘Budhiman’ with the proviso that it would not intrude into critical control and combat functions.

The extent to which the IPMS had penetrated systems on-board the USS McCain is not entirely clear, but it is well known that in the last two decades, the USN has resorted to deep cuts in manpower and invested heavily in control automation. Inferences are evident.

On 21 August, nautical twilight was at 0618 hrs (all times Singapore standard), the moon was in its last quarter, and moon rise was at 0623 hrs. It was dark, however, visibility was good and the sea calm. Collision occurred at 0524 hrs; USS McCain was breached on the port side causing extensive flooding. Examination of the track generated by the Automatic Identification System (AIS) video indicates the Alnic MC approaching Singapore’s easternmost TSS; about 56 nautical miles east of Singapore, at a speed of 9 knots, when it suddenly crash stopped and turned hard to port, could be assumed to be the result of the collision. Unfortunately, as military vessels do not transmit AIS data, the track of the McCain is not available. However, since the McCain was headed for Singapore it is reasonable to assume that it was overtaking the slow tanker from the latter’s starboard side when it lost steering control and effected an unbridled turn over the tanker’s bulbous bows. The trapezoid form of the rupture and elongation aft would suggest events as mentioned rather than a north south crossing by the destroyer at the time of collision (after all, the destination was Singapore).

Coincidentally, two Chinese merchantmen, the Guang Zhou Wan and the Long Hu San, were in close proximity through the episode. Was that a chance presence? Or, does it add to the probability of deliberate cyber engineering of the mishap? And, why else other than to damage the strategic credibility of the USN deployed in tense conditions in the South and East China Seas? Or was it, indeed, a case of gross crew incompetence? While time and ‘sub-rosa’ inquiries could put to rest speculations, vulnerabilities of highly computerised warship systems to cyber attacks may well remain the albatross around the operational commander’s neck.

Kore Potash reports 'excellent start' to Kola definitive study

Kore Potash Limited (ASX:K2P) remains on budget and schedule for delivery of a definitive feasibility study for its Kola project in the Republic of Congo. The 14-month study has reached mid-way, Kore said, and is on track to be ready by the end of June. Kola is a huge project with measured, indicated and inferred resources of over 5bn tonnes of potash and grades running as high as 60% KCl (potassium chloride). Costs of building the mine are estimated at US$1.8bn, but Kore is confident that work currently underway can reduce this amount significantly. In today’s update, the junior said it had identified opportunities to optimise earthworks, buildings, marine facilities, brine outflow and mine development while a number of fieldwork campaigns are also nearing completion. As part of the development plans, Kore is shifting its domicile to the UK, with a meeting on the scheme of arrangement necessary for the move to be held on 27 October. Sean Bennett, chief executive, said the study progress was good. “Pleasingly, at this stage, the DFS remains on budget and on track for completion in the June quarter 2018. “Obviously, there continues to be significant challenges ahead, as one would expect with a project of this scale, and many areas that need further optimisation and design work but overall this has been an excellent start.” A French consortium of blue chip engineers including Technip FMC, Vinci Construction, Egis International and Louis Dreyfus are carrying out the work. The consortium will provide Kore with a fixed price and binding Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for Kola within three months of the completion of the DFS. At the end of September, the DFS was 43% complete compared to a targeted 45%. “The December 2017 quarter is a critical period for the company in terms of engineering deliverables, procurement activities and estimate development,” Kore added. Elsewhere, tests on the test material mined so far have been completed at the Saskatchewan Research Council laboratory in Canada and results are being incorporated into the process modelling and updated process flow diagrams.  Reported by Proactive Investors 3 hours ago.

One set of students to bet on is Team RVCE from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering in Bengaluru, India and their solar car, reinforced with Canadian company RhinoKore Composite Solution’s P100 honeycomb core.

Unlike the other solar-powered race car competitors, their vehicle, 'Arka', is built with a special material sourced from BC, Canada. Tasked with the challenge to build the most efficient solar car in India—and the world—Armstrong-based company, RhinoKore, caught Team RVCE's attention. RhinoKore Composite Solutions was approached back in 2016 by Team RVCE via LinkedIn with a special collaboration request: help provide the lightest, thinnest honeycomb core material possible for the body of their car. In April 2017, RhinoKore sent Team RVCE their foam-injected panels, including a special extra thin 3-millimeter version so it would be as lightweight as possible.

In regards to the upcoming race, Greg Ringness, Marketing Manager at RhinoKore Composite Solutions said, “RhinoKore is always looking for unique opportunities that can highlight the benefits of its cores and what better way than in a solar car race where the combination of light weight and strength are most important.

From Canada to India to Australia, it feels like the world is connected. We are excited for Team RVCE’s challenge in the race and hope they do well. Being in such a difficult competition, they should feel a great sense of pride for it.”

John Kelly's Personal Cellphone Might Have Been Compromised Watch VideoWhite House officials reportedly believe chief of staff John Kelly's personal cellphone was hacked.

Multiple U.S. government officials told Politico they don't know exactly when the suspected breach occurred, but it possibly happened as far back as last December.

Kelly, a retired U.S. Marine Corps general, became White House chief of staff back in July. Prior to that, he served as the Trump administration's secretary of homeland security.

Politico reports Kelly turned his phone over for IT help this summer after complaining it was acting up. That's when White House tech support decided the phone had been breached.

A White House spokesman said that since joining the administration, Kelly didn't use his personal phone much and that he's used a government-issued phone for official communications and any call made from inside the White House.

Officials don't know what data, if any, may have been accessed from Kelly's personal phone. But, he's no longer using it.  Reported by Newsy 22 hours ago.
